What are the possible issues with cut outs and a turbo set up?

Have a friend with same setup running hi flow cats and he ran into heat issues when running with them open. Melted some shit. I haven't had that issue but not running cats either.
Guess I thought the dump would be upstream of the cats so I wonder why his cats melted? Did he think it was because of the cutouts or something else?

I dont know much about turbo's but I dont see how cutouts could work since the whole principle of the turbo is built on exhaust pressure spinning the turbine, so if you dump the exhaust upstream of the waste gate then you would be defeating then entire purpose, but hey, I am definitely no expert. Possibly someone else could chime in on this question.

The cut outs would be after the exhaust unless you had the sts system

I gave this (melting the cats) more thought and about the only thing I could come up with is that when opening the dump upstream of the cats it pulled a vacuum on the tail pipe and sucked outside air backwards through the cats which probably reacted with the air.

I know that sounds pretty far fetched, but I worked in a Refinery for 35 years and have seen some pretty weird things along this line happen to process equipment.
