Z/28 beats GT350 at Laguna Seca
I watched this video about the GT350 and GT350R from The Fast Lane Car and quickly found out they did a "hot lap" and filmed it with a GoPro. Curious, I did my own investigation and looked up the Z/28 times to compare. The time for the GT350 was ~1:41:00 and the time for the Z/28 during the Motor Trend Hot Lap test in 2014 was 1:37:82. Granted, I timed the GT350 video with my phone's stopwatch and I don't know if it was a professional driver or not. The Z/28 video was with pro driver Randy Pobst. The track conditions look to be very similar for both videos even though they were shot almost a year apart. Again, this is NOT proof the Zee is faster but I think the 3+ seconds of time difference is big enough to call this one.
One thing is for sure, the next-gen rivalry between these cars will be interesting to say the least. I can't wait for the official times to get out so we know for sure how much faster the Z/28 is! The hot lap for the Mustang is about 7 minutes into the video. |

The R version is the one we have to really be concerned with but it will be a closely fought battle.

I am absolutely positive that the outcome will be 350R > Z28 > 350. Cant wait for an actual head to head. I got money riding on this outcome.

Are there any Z/28 lap times with someone other than Randy Pobst driving?

The fast lane guys are idiots!
I love both cars but would rather see both cars driven by the same driver for a comparison. |

I was expecting more even for the non-R. There's been a couple guys on here that have run within ~2 seconds of that at laguna seca in their stock 1LE.
I want to see the z28 vs 350r with randy pobst behind the wheel. I have a feeling the z28 wont be dethroned so easily. |

I will wait for Randy Pobst to drive it. The R will probably be faster than the Z. The non R will probably be pretty close to the Z.

If you're talking IMSA series, you cannot judge by how the cars are performing due to balance of performance adjustments to keep the cars close to equal, which can add restrictions to cars if they are too successful on the track.

At Grattan raceway in MI the GT350R is a second faster than a Z/28. The GT350 Track Pack is about 2 seconds slower. All on the same day.

The accomplishment isn't the fact that they can beat the Z/28 by a second. The win is that they can do it closer to 60 grand. I don't doubt GM will have an answer to the GT350R, I just wish the manufacturers could have timed them to release closer together. We could run into a 1LE/Boss situation where Ford quits making the GT350 once a new Z/28 is released. I would like to see a 6th gen 1LE that could handle a GT350 for cheaper. I don't think with this new platform they would even need to upgrade the LT1 to do it.

+1 no money for me and I must say I really am liking the look of the 350 more and more...it's growing on me. I bet BRT on here will be the first of us to own a 350R and Z for direct compare. If things work out I will drive both the 350 and 350R in a few weeks at Lime Rock. It will be so much fun driving in to this event in the Z.
