So, I think I need some help...

Hey guys, got me new camaro, and put 800km on it in 5 days. Tried out sport mode and tap shift. I see that it holds the gears longer than drive when it's in sport mode. So tonight, I drove about 20 minutes so the car was hot, and when I got back in the car after getting groceries, I felt the car hold the gears longer like it was in sport mode. Thought nothing of it, until I was at about 60k/h an it shifted into 1st and shut down. I did NOT hit the tap shifter, and it was in drive. Now, it always says M* when I am in drive, and I can't get it to stay in drive. Any help is appreciated. I have a 2lt RS 2012 with 800km

The only thing I would say is maybe you accidentally hit the paddle shifter...but you say that you didn't so I honestly do not know. When my car is in sport mode(M) it displays an S and while in drive it displays a D

Ya, when you drop the shifter past d, an S comes up on the dic. That's sport mode, it just holds shifts longer, and feels more sporty. Then when you use the shifter, it will come up M (whatever gear). Mine is stuck in the M mode, even when I put the car in drive.

That's is a little strange because on the A6 the shifts are computer monitored so if the computer believes the shift will either be to High or low in the rpm bands it either wil not let you shift or it will shift down for you. Atleast that's how the 12 SS I drove felt like. I can't really help as I have manual car.

Even after turning your car off and back on it still shows the M? Does it show it when you shift all through PRNDM?

Take it to the dealer. Let them figure it out. Keep us posted!

I thought about that, but I would want the dealer to document that it happened in the first place. If you disconnect the battery and it fixes it, you have no proof that it ever happened.

Not nessecarily. It's possible the problem will set a code into the history. Not everything that sets a DTC will illuminate a MIL to let you know. But if a DTC has been set it will remain in history until either it is erased via scan tool or the car has completed 40 trips without failure. My advice though would still be to take it into the dealership. Usually when a auto trans vehicle goes into 1st and wont come out its put itself into limp mode. Could be a number of things wrong.

I stand corrected. Thanks!

Try holding the right paddle for a couple of seconds, which exits manual mode while in Drive (and I think returns to automatic sport mode while in S). Usually, the car will do this automatically, but maybe you have a bad signal wire or paddle that makes the car think its receiving constant paddle input.

Held the plus paddle, and it returned to normal! Restart the car, and it's back into m mode. Could it be the shift lever linkage is improperly adjusted? It would think it is in the m position when it's in the d position?
