Question for those who perform their own maintenance

Is there no fear of potential warranty claims being denied due to no record of services done at a dealer?

I recently became a part of the Camaro community and it’s also my first Chevy, so I don’t know how the brand or the dealerships handle this kind of thing. I’d love to hear everyone’s experience and/or perspective.

As long as you keep some receipts for oil and a filter, etc you should be fine. A dealer is totally not need for service in order to keep a warranty.

In general, no.

If a warranty claim is disputed you may be asked to prove that you maintained the vehicle in accordance with the service schedule, so you should keep your own records for the work you perform. You should be able to identify the date, mileage, service performed, and the exact fluids and parts you used. I keep my receipts.

In my experience, it's that simple. Never had a claim for a catastrophic failure. I had a head fail on a Chrysler engine and the service history was never questioned but that's because it was a well-known defect. It was covered.

I make a spreadsheet for each vehicle and scan the receipts so I have a digital record of maintenance, whether I do it myself or for something beyond my capabilities, at a shop.

Never had an issue with any Chevrolet vehicle I’ve owned. I keep a super detailed spreadsheet with receipts/photos attached. Probably way overboard but as an engineer it makes me feel good

Maintenance history only gets questioned if the issue could be attributed to lack of proper maintenance, i.e. your oil pickup is sludged up because the oil hasn't been changed for 40k miles, etc.

As a former GM employee I've had numerous GM vehicles and have always done basic maintenance of those vehicles myself and have never once been asked to prove that my vehicle had been maintained when brought in for recalls, or part failures.
When it comes to the basic service of my Camaro I won't let the dealership touch my car. It's been a year since I bought my Camaro and it has never been in for any kind of service. GM can keep their one free oil change, I'll do it myself because I know it will be done right!
I've kept nothing more than dates, service I performed, and the millage it was performed. All being recorded in the back of my owners manual.

Considering that GM now gives buyers one 'free' oil change and tire rotation it would be a burden on customers to require them to prove they had maintained the vehicle. Sure they can turn down warranty work when there's signs of obvious abuse, but refusing warranty service because a customer can't prove they maintained the vehicle would be more expensive to GM than the cost of doing the warranty work.

It's pretty nerve wracking and a real roll of the dice these days to expect thorough and competent service.

I had an engine failure at 23k miles and am getting a new engine from GM under warranty. I self perform all maintenance. I keep a Google Sheets doc that logs all maintenance including date, mileage, and what I used.

Use only GM approved parts and fluids. Yes, 0W-40 Supercar is expensive, but the PF-64 isn't.

Were they a pain about it at all or was it basically a breeze?

The entire experience is here: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=622725

They never even asked for records of maintenance. I just provided them unsolicited after they had already started processing it as a warranty claim.

My dealer was great. The delay was mostly because the shop manager was on vacation for a week and GM was asking the dealer to try a few things.
