changing camshafts in ls3. Does everyone upgrade the chain?

Is it necessary?

+1 and like we mentioned before. On a car with twin turbos I'd really want that added protection. Adding a dual row chain and a high volume oil pump are a smart move on a big power car.

Dbl roller chains are so SBC, a katech C5R chain will suffice, harmonics from cheap pullies are what breaks them more often than not.

I didn't change my chain or oil pump and I have about 140,000 miles on mine (~70K miles on the cam).

... and I have yet to read of a chain failing on an LS3.... So I don't know why everyone is talking about cheap insurance. Changing the chain is a real pain if you aren't already taking the oil pump off.

however I have read plenty of threads about oil pump failures... so you will need to make that call yourself.

Chain failure on the LS engines could result in catastrophic engine damage. For $150 extra bucks and a little more labor, it's unwise to ignore this crucial component during a cam swap.

Think of it this way: you're using an aftermarket cam, aftermarket springs, etc. Why would you keep the chain stock? C5-r chain for the win.

My cam installer / tuner has been in the business since 1990, he did not suggest changing the chain or oil pump. He indicated the GM OEM parts are of equal quality and many times better than aftermarket.

I will be changing my oil pump and timing chain when I do heads and cam and adding the LS2 dampner as well. The chain doesn't have to break you can have timing issues just from chain stretch.

I too have read were to replace the chain to keep the factory chain from breaking but have not read or seen were one has broken. Pumps and tensioners I have read were they have failed but not the chain.

Your tuner installer has no clue then. YOU do the search on Ls pump failures. YOU do the research on how the mellings are blueprinted and have superior quality materials than OEM. YOU do the research on the differences between a katech and C5R chains.
Google is your friend. Then come back and report your findings. Don't just believe what people say and repeat it without you knowing exactly what you talking about bud.

Never seen a timing chain on the newer (08+) LS engines break on anything coming through our shop. The older LS engines had poor quality timing chains, but the newer ones are good to go unless you are building an all out racing engine. Same goes for the oil pumps, if anything, just port the pump and shim the spring and its pretty stout after that.
