It's not meant to be compared to the ZL1.

One is a Grand Touring car (ZL-1/ZR-1/GT500) and the other is a mean bitch (Z-28..Ford doesn't have one of these to compare to, the Laguna Seca Boss from the last two years is about as close as it gets, and it's not really comparable).
You're right.. they're both different animals. But I got to say in my opinion the revised tail lamps are ugly for 2014.

anybody can ditch their radio, AC, and even the backseats if they want a track only ZL1. But since losing weight is so difficult in the 5th Gen camaro without sacrificing amenities, people find it easier to add power or change suspension components to achieve better track results.

Why not compare them? They are both Camaro's and both street legal. They are both track cars. I thought about it because I like the Z/28 but after reading the specs I said no way, doesn't fit my wants and needs. So, yes I compared them and came to the conclusion NO WAY would I trade my ZL1 for a Z/28. That is what these forums are about, trading opinions and information.

Exactly. Engineering it to be 300 lbs lighter is much different than stripping out radio, a/c, carpet etc. to lighten it up and in turn produce faster track times.

I was kind of disappointed in how much the Z28 looks like the ZL1. I still think the new Z28 is too busy looking. As for now not a big fan but that could change. I have owned Camaros for many Years and never saw so many different models for camaros as much as this generations. We now have the LS,LT,SS,ZL1,HOT Wheels,Z28 I liked when we just drove either the Iroc, Z28 or Camaro. People knew right away by looking at the camaro which model it was, now it seems so many models looking so much alike with just a couple of changes.
I am not saying GM is not doing a good job just saying too much of the same.
Sorry if I offended anyone, My thoughts.
Awesome collection of Camaro's. For the record the only thing i would want from the new Z28 over the ZL1 are those recaro seats but that's it. I'm still of the opinion the 12-13 ZL1 is the best camaro ever made.
