If I go to the store in my Camaro and such store doesn't have any safe parking spots, I go somewhere else.

I would have went to a shop and got them to fix it for a fraction of the cost, it's just a little ding. I wouldn't sleep easy knowing that I just took 550$ from a family for something so small. Yes I believe the guy should pay and that he's an ass for not caring but come on dude, no need to break their bank for this.

I don't feel sorry for the family. If they pay the price, then maybe there's a lesson in there that can be passed on to their kids. If you can't afford it, then stay at the house or get a better paying job. Why does the victim have to shoulder any burden on this?

Sure, it probably wasn't intentional, but the carelessness of slinging open doors comes with a price. $550 in this case. Pay up or educate the family on parking lot etiquette.

And DON'T park any car in public parking garages, etc., where this has a probability of happening if you can at all help it.

did he pay you cash on the spot? or write a check?

I'm sure I'm not the only person who had the wind grab their door and accidently strike the car next to mine... I'd hate to drop $550 every time that happens. Expect dings if you park next to cars... that's why I park in the boondocks.

What is the difference , cash /check
He most likely paid it strait to the dealer , that's what the OP should have ask to be done
By doing it that way , if the guy try to cancel that check , he would be in a much bigger problem and would have start the all thing over again

If one of you had a dent that little and I said I'll fix it for $550, would you pay me for it? I don't think any of you would. I guarantee you would say it's a rip for sure, because I could fix that tiny dent and it would be perfect in less than 1 minute and be done with it.

I'm just saying, it could have been handled differently. Especially if one of the kids did it. I'm sure the family could have done a lot more with $550 then fix that dime sized dent.

The word "vandal" implies they did it on purpose.

That's why I don't drive my Camaro to malls...grocery store or errands...and if I did..I park far away from everyone and walk.

You can't have nice shit without someone mucking it up....and it's always someone with a POS car that is the offender.

The OP needs to do a better job of getting ALL of the wax off the car. The big white streak of old wax is almost as bad as the dent. $550 is high to repair this damage. Going to the dealer ensured the price would be high, but maybe next time the guy driving the van will more careful.

I'm looking for a constructive point here.

Please explain your refute based on my comment you quoted.
