1LE tires based on my experience
Have gone thru 3 sets so thought would share my "musings" here, after 16 track days and about 9k miles thus far. NB this refers to dual purpose usage - tracks and some DD - on stock rims:
1) Stock S3: 6 track days. Life still left on them albeit not too much. I really like this tire handling wise and for the price they can't be beat value wise ($1380 CAD). 2) RE71R 295 square: 4 tracks days. RF is almost corded on the INSIDE. I wasn't able to swap F wheels due to much rain (they are directional so one needs to flip them on a wheel to retain rain capability). Felt good handling wise, never got greasy on me. Very loud for DD making really funky noises depending on pavement type. $1750 CAD 3) Cup2 in stock sizes: 6 track days. LF chunked and corded on the OUTSIDE. Softest sidewalls of the three. At times somewhat vague albeit obviously very capable. Superb as DD. At $2700 CAD fails to deliver pace or longevity premium (I was swapping fronts). Bottom line: going back to stockers based on fairly close performance vs the other 2 tires pace wise, price, good longevity, ease of swapping L with R and (my preferred) gearing allowing staying in 3rd (albeit on short tracks square might be better). I also think staggered is better for fast (3 digit) sweepers, where square lacked a wee bit of R grip for me - albeit in a very minor fashion and not affecting overall stability per se. |

Three sets of tires in 9000 miles?
My hero! I'm hoping daily driving will yield greater tire life span if track days are not part of their duty. Rock on! |

I have about 7k miles on my GY's with 8 Auto-X events and 2 track days, still plenty of life left!

I know it's probably been covered somewhere else, but just to confirm. The RE71r 295 squared fit without issues on the stock wheels? I'm considering either a 295/30/20 or 305/30/19 squared setup primarily for autoX duty.

Great on the street, wear like NT01's on track and are respectable at AutoX. If you are looking for a true 'do it all' tire, then they are hard to beat. I am fairly certain I am adding a 2nd set of wheels/tires for next year (19"'s RE71/Rival 305 square) because there are other 1LE's showing up in AS in my region and running RE71s.

Indeed S3s impressed me the most for their blend of performance, good wear and feel. Not to mention the price!
The RE71Rs were most disappointing as they only lasted 4 days at Mosport. BUT, their life would have been extended had I had a square WHEEL set up and be able to rotate them rear to front. They also surprised me, as the inside F tire (right) wore out first and on the inside, which did catch me by surprise - I must admit, given I run 2.6 F camber. The Cup2s were very capable, but surprised me by chunking the outside of the left tire, to the cords. Mind you I was giving rides to a long line up of folks incl chief instructor for BMW and Ferrari clubs all of whom wanted to experience the 1LE first hand Still, for the price I didn't expect them to give up quite like this. Bottom line, all 3 tires (and the car!) allowed me to better my PBs previously set in a C5Z on NT01s at varying tracks, from GP types to short 1.8 mile ones. That's quite a feat IMO as my driving hasn't changed much over the past few yrs. |

Terrific! I love the GY's. I just hope i can get 10k miles out of them. The twisty mountain roads north of L.A. are like 20 grit sandpaper. That's where i do all my driving.

They evaporate at an alarming rate when they get hot (on track), but are fairly durable for AutoX since they barely reach their operating temp for more than 60 seconds at a time.

This could be due to size and/or very stiff carcass (they were a bitch to mount according to my mechanic). But switching front wheels left to right should help with that. The issue with that I that outside shoulder channels now point in a wrong direction for water evacuation. Also, flipping them on a wheel won't solve the issue as the used up inside shoulder becomes the outside one (which does work hard). But, with a square wheel set up one could easily move the rears to the front and hence extend their life quite a bit. The issue is that this is not possible on stock rims without re mounting them (PITA and cost). So as much as I didn't like them on stock rims, they could excel on a square rim set up. I did 16x30min sessions over a 3 day event at Mosport and they gripped very well. But I am staying with stock wheels and for this reason think S3s are a better choice (allow easy left to right rotation of fronts and rears, etc). Cheers! |

How are these tires in the cold? I hope to drive my 1LE in freezing temperatures (when it is dry).
How is it? Do these turn into hockey pucks or crack like the previous Goodyear supercar tires did on the Gen5 1LE and ZL1 |
