You're probably right about the towers. Either that or middle-man companies that buy and sell bandwidth through multiple carriers. It's really the only way to guarantee service wherever there's a tower. I guess it could be tested easy enough... go to a service area where you can't pick-up a cell phone signal and press the OnStar button.
It is on the My Chevrolet APP. when I used up my free trial and went to apply it says AT&T. I will see if I can get a screen shot.

In my 2010 i never found a spot where on star would not work. And removing the hardware was never heard of at that current time. They upgraded since and offered to install new free hardware but I declined, so now they have no way of tracking me unless I pay out of pocket for updated hardware.

I only paid because of the instant crash response feature, I do a lot of night time, bad weather long distance driving in areas where cell phones get little signal if any.

Thanks for the info. I ditched the MyChey app for the reasons I mentioned earlier.

Hmm... maybe someone was blowing smoke up my @$$ at OnStar. Now I'm wondering if it's truly unlimited bandwidth, as they claimed. Guess I'll have to go test the signal in a known AT&T blind spot nearby.

They don't need a court order when you've given both GM and OnStar your permission to collect data,(as you've now waived your privacy rights).

Read the GM privacy statement again and read my posts on the subject.

You're privacy is non-existant and the all data collected can now be distributed.

A couple of items to consider, Onstar does not know who is driving unless you speak to them. And, the Onstar in your vehicle is considerably more power and has a superior antenna to your handheld phone. Therefore, going to an area where your personal cell phone has no signal to test your Onstar connection is apples and oranges.
