5.3 vs 6.2 for new Silverado?
Looks like I'm going to be in the market for a new truck. It will definitely be a 2016 MY. I'm wondering what everyone's opinion is on which motor would be the better choice. Window sticker only shows 1mpg difference but I just find that hard to believe. Especially with the 5.3 having cylinder deactivation and the 6.2 not. If the mileage is really that close then it would be a no brainer. But I'm thinking real world mileage would be a different story. I don't pull a ton of stuff but I do pull some and would like to be able pull my car around with no problems.

Here's two window stickers, both 4wd crew cabs, one 5.3, and the other 6.2.

im in the same boat as you, im going with the 6.2 for the 8 speed transmission.. i test drove both and the 8 speed was just so much more smoother.

Just because its the same displacement doesn't make it the same engine. The 6.2L truck engine is an L86, not an LT1.

I can't tell for sure but the 6.2 has a 3.08 rear axel ratio and the 5.3 has the 3.42. That would make them similar in MPG.

I have no experience with cylinder deactivation but it seems like it could reduce reliability when you add another complication like that to a motor, so I would go with the 6.2 liter.

You can get the 8 speed with the 5.3L for 2016. Just FYI.

both trouble free, but some people HATE cylinder deactivation after they buy the truck.
only seen on major fail on a late 5.3- had a defect right off the lot and we swapped the engine for a new one. That was an exception and could happen on any car and any engine. The 6.2 will prove to be thirstier than the 5.3 overall as one would expect. If you tow, the 6.2 really shines- but if it's rare to tow anything the 5.3 is probably the right choice.

I have a 13 Silv with 5.3. I do not really care for cyl deact much but its not too bad. I am tickled with tow mode. I just towed my 1le with a Featherweight alum trailer on a trip. Barely noticed it and averaged 16 mpg. Granted no mountains in IA...

All good advice. I probably don't NEED the 6.2 but it sure would be nice. Are we all 100% sure the 6.2 L86 doesn't have cylinder deactivation? I was told it didnt but I'm seeing some contradictions to that online. A lot of websites say the 6.2 L86 ecotec3 DOES have the active fuel management.

Doesn't chevy offer any lower gear options in either motor? I would love the 6.2 with a 4:10 gear option.

Best friend has the 6.2 in his 2015 GMC AWD Denali, it is just stupid insane. Made the mistake of taking off traction control, it can spin tires through three gears. 6 speed, 3.42 rear end with AFM. Diesel belongs in trucks and Gas in cars...but, that is an extremely nice go fast truck.

I am pretty sure the 6.2 has deactivation.
