Well now that they have announced it I can finally talk openly about it!

For over a month I have been working on the press intro for the Charger Hellcat to be launched here at Summit Point in October. On Monday they came to do a tire test with a 392 SRT Charger and a Hellcat. The Hellcat had a power steering failure after the rack had been swapped out, so it did not make it. I did get to do some laps in the 392 with 8 speed auto however.

On track the weight does not seem to bother the car. I was able after a few laps to drift the car through some turns without worry. On laps where I was just feeling things out I noticed some push on entry that I was able to transition to oversteer with either throttle lift, brake squeeze, or just plain judicious throttle use. In track mode the car will allow some pretty lurid slides, and the trans will reliably hold a lower gear even when not at full throttle.

The car was planted and solid through high speed turns and was able to haul the car down from 130+ mph with ease before our tight right hander at the end of the straight. I was told they got the Hellcat to 204 mph, and 207 with a tail wind. They also told me of the 11 flat quarter mile.

In "Valet" mode, the car limits output to 165 HP and starts in 2nd gear. We did a lap around the track in Valet and it drives normal, it just shifts at 4k rpm to limit power. Even at that level, the car was as quick as some of the cars we used to think of as quick in their day.

I was also told the Hellcat car will get placed into the historical collection at Chrysler given the awesome numbers the car produced. You could tell they were very proud of the car!

I will get wheel time in the Hellcat in October and will let you all know what I think!

Lost- How did you like the 392 powerband? I managed to run my 12 to 12:40s stock, I expect 15 to be faster. Your thoughts?

The power band felt just fine! No dips in power, and when it shifted to a higher gear, it was quick enough to keep the forward momentum with no hiccup. It also sounds awesome when it hits the next gear, giving a nice crack in the air.

Funny to watch a group of guys in the paddock all turn and try to see the car making all the noise as it came out of turn ten. From the track edge, you would almost swear it was a race car with muffled exhaust.

This is about the Charger Hellcat, not the Challenger. Leave it alone.

For which we have ZERO independent performance metrics. Until then, the Challenger is the closest indicator to how the Charger will perform and the Challenger didn't come close to the Dodge marketing claims. The manual was an embarrassment all together and testament to the corners Dodge cut to put such an engine in an archaic chassis with little investment to making the most of that power. We can expect more of the same from the Charger.

Damn every post you make sounds more butthurt than the one before it! Just enjoy the car you have and try not to burst a blood vessel worrying yourself to death about another car that actually might end up being faster than you. It seems like you try to justify your purchase with every post, just enjoy the fact that other manufacturers are putting out decent vehicles. You remind me of the over the top sports fan who lives and dies by their team instead of just having a good time watching what's going on!
