If that's what he is implying he would be correct. Most "fully synthetic" oil is not fully synthetic. Most are group 4 synthetics. Only group 5 synthetics are true "fully synthetic" oils.

Got me to thinking, why is it that oil that is 100% synthetic considering king of the roost? Surely some of the semi-synthetics are plenty good, exceed mfg's specs. I am speaking about non-racing, just normal driving, which with a Camaro means an occasional burn out and hammering of the accelerator.

Anyways, I have heard all about this, still use Mobil 1 as that is what the car came with. Many say it isn't "fully synthetic" even though the containers claim they are. Whatever.

You have the groupings mixed up. Group 3 is commonly referred to as synthetic but isn't and Group 4 is 100% synthetic oil made using PAO as a base. Group 5 contains all oils that doesn't fall into any of the other 4 groups and is so diverse there isn't a common name for it. What a Group 5 oil is called depends on the refining process and what the base stock is.

This goes back to the groupings. US allows Group 3 oils to be marketed as synthetic because they go through an extra refining process. The US is the only country in the world that allows this, all other countries do not allow Group 3 oils to be sold as synthetic, only Group 4 and select Group 5 oils. Mobil 1 is a Group 5 oil and is allowed to be marketed and sold as a full synthetic oil everywhere in the world. The fact that Europe and Japan who are more strict on oil companies than the US allow Mobil 1 to be sold as a full synthetic should tell you something.

Several on here lately 2 of which are my friends have used Mobil 1 the entire time in the cars and at 9x,xxx miles their engines are shot with pitted rollers, gouged and chipped cams and other damage.
Do you have any proof that the Pennzoil synthetic will not cause the same damage at 90K?

No proof of that, but the testing from Blackstone Labs and others show it to be much better than Mobil 1.

Also that is very high mileage for a <=3 year old car IMO. Do you have a thread on the testing done?

There is a thread somewhere on here that compared like 50 different oils and weights and their performance.

Pennzoil Ultra rated number 1 and Mobil 1 rated number 3 in their tests with only a small difference between the two, Pennzoil Platinum wasn't tested. According to Pennzoil there is suppose to be a decent difference between their Ultra and Platinum. If that's the case, there is no way Platinum is "much better" than a oil that is almost on par with their top tier oil.

Independent testing labs,of used Oil samples, are not always conclusive because of all the variables present to each testing sample and the vehicle they came from,as well as the conditions that particular vehicle was subjected to.

Virgin Oil analysis is a much better indicator of Oil performance.
