Trunk security
Long time listener, first time caller. Here's the question:
Are catchcans worth it? Just kidding! Since there is no way to "lock" the trunk easily. I was thinking about putting a hidden switch inline with the trunk button. My idea was to have a switch under the steering column (or somewhere). When the switch is in the off position it doesn't allow the trunk button to work and when the switch is in the on position it allows the trunk switch to work normally. I don't know how the trunk button works or which side of the button would be the best to tap into. And yes, I have thought about the rear seat fold down release. I might disable it or move it to the trunk. Thoughts? |

In truth, I know for a fact people have tried to get in my trunk. One time, they actually stole the entire license plate and frame, leaving the hole wide open and they still couldn't get in. I had to replace my rear plate with my front plate because of this. Trunk security isn't really something I'm too worried about... like the idea tho, but if someone is already in my car - I would worry about other things besides what's in my trunk. |

Welcome to the forums and thank you for not posting if catch cans are worth it as a legitimate question as your first post!
The trunks are actually rather easy to lock outside of the rear pass through on coupes. If you push the lock button on the key fob the trunk is locked and cannot be opened without unlocking the car first. You can reach in through an open window, but as long as you pushed the key fob lock button the trunk release button will not open the trunk. On the flip side, if you can squeeze through an open window on a coupe to get to the trunk release then you need to eat a couple of sandwiches because you are way to thin!

It's my understanding that if your alarm is set (windows up, doors locked), the trunk button won't work. So if someone smashes your window and reaches in to press the trunk button, the trunk still won't open. Of course, if you leave your car unlocked, well, then so is your trunk.

Nice work boys. I just tested the crazy "locking the car" option and it does disable the trunk button. How about that! You just saved me a afternoon of pointless work. Maybe now just a relocation of the seat folding tab to the trunk?

Glad to help. As for the seat latch, I wouldn't know - 'verts don't have a drop-down seat.

What item that's so important do you have in your trunk?

I'm don't have anything in particular that super valuable. I do have an air compressor, jump box, prepper supplies, occasionally work stuff, and the old lady's purse at time, sadly no trunk monkey. I just hate the thought of some crack head selling my property for a crack rock. If there's something that's relatively easy to do that helps make my stuff more secure I'll do it.

Seriously, if you can fit through an open window on a 5th gen coupe you're either 5, or anorexic. I think you'll be fine without having to rig something up to get the pass through disabled. If you're paranoid enough that you think someone will get in there, you could just cut the pass through release or tuck it back into the crevice, but I would recommend against doing so in case your battery dies and you need in the trunk. If you have a full dead battery and not just a run down one, your only option into the trunk is that pass through. (Helpful in case you install headers and forget to not close the trunk all of the way after you disconnect the battery.)

I just keep a trunk monkey in mine. Seriously though, if i wanted to put a switch in like you are talking about, i would break power that goes directly to the unlock mechanism. That however won't stop a crowbar or a digging iron. It seems like they are more interested the entire car anyhow these days or just the wheels.
