Now it is just useless bantering and everyone trying to prove the last man wrong. The OP doesn't need to understand the forces acting upon his car. Especially completely irrelevant information like if the ground wasn't there, and neither does anyone else. So just answer the question to the best of your ability, or if you have no clue just move on. I will learn the "string theory" and quantum mechanics another time.(I know that is not what you all were explaining please do not start flaming me for joking)
One might suppose from his question ..........he or some inquisitive viewer among the masses, whose pulled towards the subject (no pun intended) might benefit. Abilities..........or the lack of, obviously vary. No joking

Technically, the ground keeps you there. Move the ground out of the way and you'd be off and accelerating again.
Hey I'm still trying to figure out how Moses, parted the sea's. I'm thankful for the ground just like it is.........potholes and sinkholes excluded.

I use this technique from time to time. Save those brake pads as much as I can.

Does no one else in the world know this? And these people live there.

Time to crack the book.
No people do not understand this. Had to teach the wife why the automatic transmission in her odyssey, has various gears. Every time I head out to El Paso, TX, I take a drive on Transmountain Road. Amazing to see all the brake light like you said you saw.

Careful where you live. Some places have no engine braking signs. They say its for noise abatement but its really because people drive like crap and dont pay attention. Every time I get a tailgater on me figuring what I had for lunch, I like to scare them by downshifting a bit.

For the most part no. Brake pads are cheap and easy to replace. A clutch. Not so much...

That applies to heavy trucks with Jake Brakes, which are quite noisy.

I always thought it would cause excessive wear on the clutch so I don't do it. When slowing down for a stop sign or stop light I shift to neutral and coast to a stop.

Only if you're riding the clutch to slow down. If you're just using engine compression to slow, and you rev-match while downshifting, there's no wear on the clutch.
