Window tint?

Not sure what percent tint to get. Was thinking about 20, anyone have any suggestions?

tint levels is really driven mostly by preference and state/local law(enforcement). 20% is a sweet spot for me on most cars. I've done darker in the back (5-10%) and lighter on the front (20-30%) before too. I like darker for keepin the cabin cool and for privacy (toys, kids, etc), but too dark and it might draw unwanted attention from law enforcement. i'd recommend, regardless of exactly how dark it is, put the windows down before you ever get approached by a LEO, they like to know what you're up to in there for everyone's safety.

Florida Law is:
  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.
  • Front Side windows: Must allow more than 28% of light in.
  • Back Side windows: Must allow more than 15% of light in.
  • Rear Window: Must allow more than 15% of light in.

according to: http://www.tinting-laws.com/florida/

I agree, 20% is the way to go. When I was young I would always get 5%, got at least one ticket with every car I tinted that dark. Moved to 15%, still ticketed. Been getting 20% on my last 6 cars and have had no trouble with the law. BTW, I live in GA and last I checked the legal percentage is 35%.

I always just tell the places "As dark as legally allowable".

Here in MA that equates to barely tinted, sadly. Every little bit helps, so I do it.

Agree with you 100 percent. I guess in Florida it's a bit of a risk to run 20 percent especially if the cops want to be jackasses about it. May have to go 30...

I run 20% on mine without issue. I have the red interior and it's still partially visible from the outside.

are you tinting it to keep the light out or tinting to keep the heat out? IR Tint will keep the heat out better than regular tint.

I got pulled over in my Firebird by a Sheriff deputy. He put a light meter on my window and it was at 17%. He gave me a verbal warning but I went and had my car retinted to 35% anyway. That set me back $275. Now when I have tinting done I ask for maximum legal tinting.

Yep what I always plan to do. I just don't have the time to go around removing tint and putting it back on because of tickets. Would I love 15% all the way around heck ya, but it's just not worth the hassle like it was when I was younger heh.

Keep in mind, the windows come from the factory with a tint level (written on the glass) and that must be factored into what level of light blocking tint you can legally apply and still actually pass a test with.

Basically in california, with the Camaro the only window I'd be allowed to tint legally is the rear window. Everything else is already at the limit.

edit: unless i went with clear tint for IR/UV blocking.

whatever you do, before you get it installed check a sample and view it at an angle. The angle of the rear window makes the tint darker than straight through. I tried 18% and it was way to dark for me.
