My trunk chipped my car's paint!

Shoot!
I opened my trunk the other day, and for some reason the trunk lid came in contact with the body of my car and took off a chunk of paint!!!!

Has anyone else had this happen? Is a chip like this covered under warranty?

I'm sure I can add a spacer or something under the trunk hinge, but I'm worried about doing more paint damage by separating the hinge from the body.

What would you do?

Mine did the same thing. They are setting me up with the bodyshop to get it fixed at no cost to me.

Negative, moving body part misalignment or missing parts such as strike bumpers which might cause paint chipping in this fashion are covered under warranty. The car absolutely isn't supposed to chip its own paint when closing the doors, hood, trunk, gas cap cover or any other painted items. If it does something is wrong and you can get it repaired under warranty. I've done this on a different car without a word said by the dealer.

I cant believe someone would think that a car chipping its own paint is not covered under warranty.

Door fitting used to be the number one warranty item. But that was mostly dealers knowing they could just charge it. GM eventually just cut it off knowing the body shop was fitting good doors.

By design, even the 4 bar decklid hinge on the Camaro, should come nowhere near the rear quarter panels let alone chip paint.

But like everyone else, meaningless without pictures. Even video showing how close the decklid comes the quarter panel.

Yeah, they have a rep come in to look at the car before the work is done. It seemed at the time silly to me and I'm just now finding out why. You learn something new every day.

I posted about this a month or so ago. I have a chip in the upper driver side corner in the quarter panel from the trunk lid being misaligned. I haven't taken it in yet but definitely plan to have it addressed. Keep us posted on what the dealer does with it!
