I'm sorry but I still fell anyone who preorders should have that car before any random Joe on the lot does. If not its just bad customer service.

I agree. Now, tell me how it can be done. Bearing in mind there are state franchise laws but more important state and federal court decisions that have to be recognized.

Here's the thing. A dealership may get X allocations. If Y customers come in to place orders, then there are X-Y allocations that they will lose if they don't order them. Normally the dealer will use one allocation for a fully loaded version to put on the showroom floor to attract attention. The others will normally go for cars that they think will move quickly.

As I said in another thread:

Your dealer is GMs customer
You are your dealers customer

Allocation is about GM being fair to their actual customers

I get why it the way it is and I still think it's wrong. At the end of the day GM and the dealer should care more about and cater more towards the person who already laid out money. Sorry if my mindset is a little old school when it comes to customer service.

Not really. They build the iPhone in China, and for a very long time, people in China didn't have the option to buy it until months after the U.S. launch. It's all about supply, demand, and allocation of a limited inventory. Physical distance rarely plays any role in that.

I suspect it is a combination of both.

Yeah you are probably right, probably a combo of both, sounds right to me.

You gave your money to the dealer to show you are a serious buyer.

The vast majority of cars sold are not special ordered with a deposit. Your single v6 preorder is not going to make the dealer or GM jump through any hoops to make sure you get yours first.

When preorders arrive there will be other cars (just like yours) that the dealer ordered for stock. Someone will buy your exact same car or better without having to spend all the time preordering.

Just so long as they don't buy my car. LOL

A lot of does come down to when the order was placed. I say this because what if the dealer gets allocation one week and no pre orders waiting so they order it for the lot to sell. You come in the following week and take the next allocation as a pre order. Yes you pre ordered but dealer also pre ordered one to sell. As mentioned by others it could come down to color and options selected as well that might cause a delay or the lucky random deep q/c check that delays your car for another week or 2.

When I ordered I was assured that what ever the first 2ss they got on the lot be it my order or dealer order (no other 2ss preorders just a few 1ss) that they would hold it to give me first option to purchase dealer stock or wait for my order.
