being not much older, wait until after college. financial situations can change a lot in the next 6 years while you finish school. I graduated high school, my parents could have afforded sending me anywhere, I went to a small, public school on a free ride. While I was there my Dad left his job, dumped all his savings in to a new job, and that went south fast. Im glad I didnt saddle myself, or them, with a bunch of unnecessary debt.
If the car is going to be a "gift" ask for the cash instead, put it away, when youre done with school, and have a steady job, and little debt, take that 45k youve got in cash and buy the damn thing outright. If shit hits the fan instead, youve got a 45k safety net, rather than a 15k liability Dont be that guy flipping hamburgers at mcdonalds with a 50k car. |

You may be able to afford that car payment now, but it will become an anchor sized burden if you try to move out and can't afford rent because of your car payment, car insurance, and gas. It happened to a couple friends of mine
You will run into the same issue if you plan on going to college somewhere that isn't local to you, and you have to give up your current job. Of course, this assumes you will actually be paying for the car. |

any pics of your 86 Monte SS, that generation is one of my favorites, especially with T-Tops... i ended up with a grand national, but have been thinking of getting a Monte and doing a LSX swap into it like the Chevy Performance Team recently did
As for your age that is between you and your parents, but i would go overboard to not let them down... i bought a new camaro in 1988 when i was 20 in college and needed my father to co-sign... i made sure to work my tail off and never miss a payment and got it paid off two years early

I didn't have my first new car until I was 24, and it was a 4 cylinder. I didn't have my first V6 until i was 30, and that was in a Tacoma 4x4.
Each situation is different, I know some people who are over 50 and never owned a new car period. A 1ss would be a hell of a car at that age - How are you going to make payments? Have you considered that at your age, and assuming your a male, insurance on it will probably be 2 or 3 hundred a month alone? a lot of $$$ at such a young age.

My first car was a '86 Iroc back in '96. BEST SUMMER EVER!!!!! Cruzin the strips with the t-tops off, tunes with my 2-12"ers pounding away. Ahhhhh, memories!! That car was a P***Y MAGNET!
Seriously though, now at the ripe age of 35. The only way I would advise this is if your rich or your parents are footing some cash to help out. If not I would advise against it. Because A) your job is not stable at 17. (maybe if you have been there for 5 years and it is still a growing company, then sure) B) factor in all the expenses in life for entertainment, maintenance, cost of living, ect before you pull the trigger. Just my $0.02 |

yes, i have a lot of them, all 3rd gens as noted in my listings off to the side... the pic in the background is one of GM's original billboards from the 80's i got off a guy to help decorate one of my garages as i am a 3rd gen nut
the black Camaro in the pic is an '85 IROC that i put a LS376 with TVS2300 supercharger into as one of my father - son - friend project... it makes ~600 rwhp and is quite a blast at only 3400 lbs my original '88 that i bought at 20 i re-found a couple years ago in a salvage yard... my son and i have been rebuilding it the past 3 years... it has been a great project and nearing completion sounds like you get to spend a lot of time with your father at your speed shop and that is a good thing you will remember as you get older and have your own family

Every car I've owned was new when i bought it, but I paid for both and I've only had 2 cars in the 10 years I've been driving. My first car was a cobalt coupe, and I have an optima turbo now, so we're not exactly talking about expensive cars here lol.
