Motor Trend's ATS-V Review Harbinger of 6th Gen?

The V beats the C63 AMG on the track, puts down 0-60 in 3.7 and 1/4 in 12.1@ 116.2, 60-0 in 99ft(with 4 piston calipers). MT praises the chassis as one of the best.

Thoughts?

ATS-V should have won and the '16 Camaro SS LT1 with A8 will be a real 12 seconds/low 11 seconds street performer.

Isn't the new ATS-V a TTV-6? If so, why the comparison to the Camaro?

Motor Trend also just did a first drive of the Mustang GT-350 and GT-350R. The ATS-V is hitting GT-500/R numbers with the best guesstimate of Motor Trend.

"Consulting our vast cache of vehicle and performance data and applying a test-driver seat-of-the-pants algorithm, we say the 3,750-pound GT350 will run to 60 mph in 4-seconds flat and the GT350R, lighter by about hundred pounds but benefitting from wider/grippier rear tires and less rotational wheel weight, will do the same in about 3.7-3.8 seconds. The quarter-mile passes should come in at around 12 seconds at 120 mph."

The ATS-V compares to the SS for a few reasons. They are on the same platform. They should be similar in weight. They make similar power. They also have the same transmission options. The ATS-V makes more horsepower but less torque. It also has better tires. I think the SS will be slightly slower due to the tires.

Just thinking out loud, but how many runs/tries do you think these car reviews do before they pick the number they publish?

Several. I read a column about that by one of the hot shoes, talking about how they treat the cars (not very nicely) during the intstrumented tests.

Man, if the performance exhaust adds the standard 5 hp / 5 tq and the 6th gen SS is rocking 460 hp / 460 tq... that puts it 4 hp less than the ATS-V, with 15 more tq. While being lighter (if they hit the weight targets). Seems like the 6th gen is going to be one awesome camaro.

I think the best take away from this is that he 6th gen has the potential to match or exceed the ATS-V numbers. I believe that the Camaro will be limited by the factory tire selection (ATS-V has Pilot Super Sports I believe) and possibly gearing selection. However all of the early adopters are going to be very pleasantly surprised by what their cars are capable of especially with and upgrade to some drag radials for straight line performance or something similar to the PSS for handling. This does however leave some room for improvement. I can see a possible reappearance of the 1LE package with a square tire set up and more aggressive gearing. This will be VERY impressive if offered.

Everyone seems to very worried about the tires. I have some hope not a lot but some that GM in their extensive testing that, the tires that were made for the car will do fairly well.

Camaro and Cad are from two separate car divisions. So different engineers etc...He mention on the track that the Vette folks could/should talk with the Cads folks as to putting power down. So the Camaro will be different and just have to wait to see.

And the C7 and ATS-V are completely different platforms. The Camaro and ATS share the same platform architecture, but the Camaro at the same time has been customized for its application. They maybe separate divisions but they are using the same R&D and components. To me the tires are the big difference. This will probably put the 1/4 times about a tenth or two behind for the 6th gen.

To me, it all depends on how well the Camaro SS can hook compared to the ATS-V. With different tires, and a different suspension setup (even though the platform, weight, power, and transmissions are all very similar) could reduce the 0 - 60 and 1/4 mile times.

If the Camaro can launch well enough, I don't see why we couldn't have a 0 - 60 number around 4 seconds, (give or take a few tenths) and a low 12 second 1/4 mile.
