Low Oil Pressure Message
First off I know there is a TON of threads on this, but the forum is telling me the search function is not working and I'm a little desperate.
2011 Camaro LS3 84k miles I drove the car last night with no issues and parked it for an hour. I go to start it and get the low oil pressure shut engine off message. I kill the engine and restart it to see if it was a fluke. Sure enough no message this time. I carefully drive it home with no issues. Engine is quiet with no tapping or knocking.... I let the car sit again for an hour restart it and boom message comes up again. I shut it down and have not restarted it yet. My car is a 1SS so I don't have an oil pressure gauge. What are the odds it is just a sensor? I thought about hooking a manual gauge up to it to see what it reads, but I'm afraid of running the car anymore. Do I bite the bullet and just replace the pump? It seems what I read on the oil pumps failing most cars had low miles. Any help or advice is appreciated thanks! |

You can try to change the sensor, I would personally check it out with a gauge if it were my car. Get ready to buy that oil pump though, it seems likely considering it's not the L99

Personally, I would put a manual gauge on it, and pull the ignition on it, to keep it from running. Then see what kind of pressure you have while its cranking. Replacing the sensor is cheap quick and easy.

I didn't know if just turning it over with the starter would give me a good enough reading on the pressure. I think I will try that.

It's not going to be at full pressure, but it will tell you if you have pressure. Then if you have even low pressure while cranking, you can reconnect your ignition and fire it up for a few seconds to see what the pressure is at idle.

I agree with 1killerss
Mine did the same thing. Had it towed to be safe and thankfully I did. Oil pump went out because the chain tensioner broke. Still got the cam and lifters a little. Changed it all out and she is running good for now.

There have been a few reported issues with oil pumps failing. Do not run it.

Also on our cars you don't actually have to do that. You can just full throttle the pedal, it will crank and not start. ECM disables ignition

Oil pump! Just did mine a few months ago. The valve sticks open and dumps all pressure.
