if you can get out fo the SS without jsut losing your a$$ I say get the Zl1. if you going to take a bath just buy the 1le suspension parts and put a blower on the SS.
the resale on a modded SS just gets worse and worse though.

Depends what your ultimate goal is. If it is mainly power, then you can mod your SS to go beyond what a stock ZL1 is, and add the 1LE suspension and it will handle pretty good. BUT if you'd be happy with a stock ZL1 you will have a more powerful car with a warranty. Do what you can afford.

Probably not getting an objective opinion on the ZL1 forum, but I agree with the ones that said if money is no issue then get the ZL1.

I can tell you that the SS and the ZL1 are two completely different cars. The ZL1 is MUCH more than just more power.
I started out with a 2011 2SS/RS convertible and moved up to the ZL1 convertible when it came out, so I have had both cars. You can certainly spend money modding the SS to get more power, but remember you'll never recover that money if/when you sell the car, AND as you know, it will no longer be covered by warranty for the most part. The ZL1 on the other hand, will give you the power you seek, along with everything else the ZL1 has going for it, from the transmission/shifter to the mag ride, etc, etc all covered by the GM warranty. But the ZL1 is not cheap by any stroke of the imagination, from the cost of the car itself, to the gas and tires it will consume. Pocketbook aside, ZL1 wins every time. |

Plus you get that sweet mag control ride that you really can't get on the ss

I have a modded SS and if I were in the position I would go for the ZL1 hands down.

Is the SS Motor the same as the ZL1 motor minus the supercharger?. I know the transmission is entirely different right?, The SS has the 6.2 liter same as the ZL1 ?.

LSAs are built to be 20% stronger than the LS3 short-block, according to GM, and even have hypereutectic pistons with oil-spray cooling to handle the pushing power. The heads on the LSA are similar to the LS3 heads except that they were slightly redesigned to aid in mix the air/fuel being pumped in by the supercharger. I had a 2010 SS and upgraded to a Zl1 and they are completely different in many ways! Let your budget be your guide but they are not the same car and it is under warrenty by GM.

I have also had both. I had a 2012 2SS/RS/45th anniversary with full bolt ons and traded it for a 2013 ZL1. The cars are night and day, even compared to my SS with bolt ons. From a resale and warranty standpoint, the ZL1 with win, but if you just want straight line performance without the mag ride then maybe upgrading your SS is the way to go. I like the twisties as well as straight line, so with everything considered, the ZL1 is a great all round car.
