And you trust that they share *everything* with you…?!? Serious question.

As soon as the weather gets nice I’m taking my OnStar transceiver out.

The thing that gets me is that, in the year 2024 EVERONE has a smartphone. All you need is CarPlay/Android auto and you literally have everything you get from OnStar except theft tracking and satellite remote door locks.

Think about that for a minute folks….. they can unlock our doors via satellite.

Holy crap!!

To my surprise the car is still sending them data even though I went in on my desktop and turned it off back on 1/11/24. I haven't driven the car much (because of this) but it reported on 2/5/24. When I do drive it I'm aware that it could be sending data, so I drive it gently and it's still not good enough to earn my any digital trophies or badges

Not sure where to go with this, the dealer won't do anything. OnStar rep told them to tell me to tell my insurance company not to use telematics. So it's there but just pretend you don't see it?

First photo is what I saw when I created a MyChevrolet account on 1/11/24. I turned it off and the bottom photo is what I found when I checked again today, 2/16/24. Third photo is from my report showing data that was transmitted on 2/5/24, after it was turned off...
From looking at your screenshots, I went in to check mine. The moment I picked up the car up I made sure in the app my smart driver was turned off but I never went into the GM account. I just went in today and I noticed that the insurance slide was sent on but it was grayed out. On the my GM account it states, the smart driver option has to be turned on in the app for the insurance option to work, I did turn the insurance slide option to off in gm account also. I don't trust them anyway I believe they still are collecting the data regardless of the options set . You have to remove that chip like earlier stated in the thread to 💯 precent certain.

Fair enough, although there comes a point when you just have to trust others, you can't carry and sustain the entire world on your shoulders. Then again, GM and OnStar or maybe even LexisNexis aren't the ones to start that with...

Agreed, and that’s why pulling the hardware makes the most sense. Especially since it appears to be easily reversible. If your privacy means something to you, you just have to take action. These companies are fat and bloated with our data because we just go along with it. And I’m as guilty as anyone. Have owned the car for 6+ years and I’m just getting around to doing this now.

How do you go about removing the hardware you mentioned?
Thanks.

Thanks to this thread I finally got motivated enough to pull the hardware.

I don't have a Camaro, but am driving a Bolt EUV as a commuter car.
After reading this thread, I wanted to find out if Smart Driver is enabled, so I contacted OnStar. They said you would need to have an active subscription. Well, I didn't renew anything after the free trial period expired. So apparently, Smart Driver is not available to me. Yay!

If you own a smart phone and don't think you're being tracked or having your data collected, then you're kidding yourself.

I get that but my point is why even bother with OnStar or any other telematics service? It was more useful when it first came out in 1996 because back then cell phones were huge monstrosities, their battery charge didn’t last longer than maybe an hour of talk time, and they were super expensive. OnStar was a real innovation at that time.

Now, heck, everyone has a complete communications operation with thousands of times more processing power than NASA had in their entire operations when we first went to the moon in their pocket. Add that to Bluetooth and CarPlay/Android Auto and there’s really zero need for OnStar.

No one should be buying it - you literally have OnStar in your pocket already. For any car you drive. 1979 Plymouth Horizon? Yep, you have OnStar.
