Laguna Seca - Speed SF Event - Recommendations?

https://www.speedsf.com/

Speed SF is hosting a HPDE instructional day at Laguna Seca on 8/6/18. I am miraculously going to be driving through there at that time (on my way home from Vegas) and I think this is my big chance to drive that legendary track as well as get some learning in.

Has anyone ran with them before? Any other recommendations for the timeframe of 8/2 to 8/8 between Vegas and up through California to Oregon?

My favorite group to run with. Well organized and well run events. They also have a Speedsf Challenge Time Trial for experience drivers who want to compete.

A heads up: Laguna Seca has a 90db sound limit, some stock cars don't pass, my stock SS 1LE showed 94 db.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Bummer on the sound limit that is ridiculous. Now I'm worried that I might not be able to do this thing because my car is a smidge louder than stock.

If your car is factory NPP it will fail for sure. If it's aftermarket of any kind and is only a smidge louder the work around the db limit is to short shift going into turn 5 and and hold 4th gear until your entering turn 6.

I’ve never understood having DB limit for a racetrack. Or at least such a low decibel limit. The SS isn’t THAT loud so I would imagine drivers with supercars and such would be turned away all the time. If You have to constantly worry about your car being too loud i think that would take away a lot of the fun.

OK I tried to check with the group that does Sonoma and the noise restriction is 96 db...Borla says my exhaust does 97 db (not withstanding my H-Pipe and Supercharger). So I am, in essence, screwed for Laguna Seca and Sonoma.

Thunderhill has a limit of 103 so that might be my ticket but their event is too far off from the dates that I am driving through CA...so that is out :(

Buttonwillow has an event the weekend before my trip to Vegas so I guess I could leave early and go to it.

Any other ideas?

You could do Thunderhill with Trackmasters on 8/3, or NASA on 8/4 or 8/5.

Oh thank you I didn't think that the NASA dates on their calendar was for HPDE! Signing up now!

Just do the MRLS day. You'll be fine. If you're in the school you won't be going balls to wall anyway. John and I both survived the day using our own methods and we drive pretty hard. I short shifted to 5th and gave up a second to a second & a half on the lap time. Do you really think giving up a second on a track is worth saying no to? SpeedSF I believe is doing the 92db day. That's workable. They are a great group to run with.

I'm a newb to the doing the hpde. When I did Laguna I didn't hold back and never got dinged for noise. I swear there were cars that were louder going around. Next time I go back, I'm not worried about it.

Would it pass if you put the exhaust in tour (quiet) mode?

I guess I have to content with the 87db sound limit at Lime Rock.
