LS7-related crate engine delivers 750 naturally aspirated horsepower

Mercury Marine wants to put a greater emphasis on high-performance car engines in the near term, and if the 7.0-liter SB4 crate engine is any indication of the company's future, then sign us up.

The SB4 crate engine is based on General Motors' LS7 7.0-liter V-8, which last did duty in the fifth-generation Camaro's Z/28 model. However, Mercury Racing, the company's automotive engine division, only uses the LS7's block and designed its own aluminum dual-overhead cam heads—oh yes, a DOHC LS7.

With the new heads, the SB4 engine makes 750 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque. Did we mention it's naturally aspirated? That's right. No turbocharger or supercharger here. This is all engine, all the time, just as the muscle car gods intended, and it will scream to 8,000 rpm.

The SB4 crate engine is intended for pre-1968 muscle cars, according to the company, and it will bolt up to almost any automatic or manual transmission, too. Mercury Racing will make it even easier to have a fully ready package and will offer the necessary ECU with the correct tune, alternator, AC pump, pulleys, and belts for turn-key fun.

But, the SB4 crate engine also costs a whopping $32,995 for the full package. Those who do drop the rather large sum on the crate engine will have peace of mind, though. Mercury Racing will include a 12-month warranty on all of the components.

And if it's more power you're after, there's always the company's forthcoming 9.0-liter DOHC QC4 crate engine. It will make a staggering 1,350 hp.

Nice! 33k is a lot though. For about 10 grand more, I think I would buy another Z/28 and get a track ready car...

Still, DOHCs... would want to see how that goes long term...

All the Ford lovers expected this to be the new Raptor engine....I think mainly because its blue.....lol I think its safe to say Ford is done with big engines for the future....

I wonder why they say it is targeted for pre 1968 muscle cars. I guess it is too tall to put into a '70s 454 SS car ? Do 1967 cars and older really allow wider and taller engines ? ie. I thought it was harder to put in these big motors into the older body styles, ie. a 1967 Chevelle vs a 1970 Chevelle.

Tall AND wide with the DOHC heads....might be a tough fit for a Gen 5 or Gen 6 Camaro, but damn that would be fun to try!

Pretty sure Ford is developing a 7.0. Mercury Marine has nothing to do with it.

It will fit both the gen5/6 camaros, love to see this in the GEN6 Z/28 with a DCT behind it.

Probably has more to do with this:

(it is not CARB or EPA certified, so like many of the GM Performance crate engines, it’s for off-road racing use and is only street legal when installed in emissions-exempt vintage vehicles).

Than physical size.

Its all fun and games until chain stretch causes valve interference and boat anchors your $30k engine. No thanks, I'll build a number of LS engines for that and race the piss out of every one.

Though I think it's a cool engine, if I had the funds to consider this I'd be far more likely to hand the money over to Katech...

what is interesting..coming from the European car world..

...where a rebuild on a nothing special Porsche 911 motor can easily cost $30k...is how epic this motor is for the price. A high end Porsche 911 motor is $100k.

I know guys who spend $30k on EXHAUSTS for their Lambo Aventadors.

For this motor to cost $30k is amazing (to me)
