New car and long drive.....

After a long arduous journey, I think I’ve found the ZL1 to take home.

I previously had a build completed, but dealer switched up and wanted 10k over MSRP(I laughed) and played the game. Finally, I negotiated way down but things fell through when the day prior to taking delivery my company announced they were dissolving, so there went that deal.

After obtaining a position within a new company, my search continued. I made a few fumbles for sleeping on some real deals (out of state and upstate) but now finally found a car I’m willing to take home. Problem is the car is slightly over 300 miles away and I would like drive it home. That said, the break in period, it concerns me.

I’ve read through the posts about the topic which now has me wondering if I should just pay for it to be delivered or just drive her home. I have AAA which could buy me a 200 mile tow but I’d really like to drive er home.

Thoughts? Is it worth it to drive her home?

Actually, its a sketchy business if I may be so bold. I'd still fly up to inspect the car but there are alot of variables in getting it delivered in my time frame.

I too would have it delivered, but as long as you vary your speed and gear throughout the journey the car will be just fine.

Why wouldn’t you just drive the vehicle home? Seems like a no-brainer.

I was in the same position in December... I suggest paying for an enclosed transport... then taking the car for some PPF and a Ceramic Coat before you start putting miles on it. You would be bummed if you chipped your paint on the way home!

I agree. It's only 300 miles. Vary your speed and get to know your new family member. For what you'll pay, it's not worth the aggravation of locating, researching and scheduling a carrier. Go inspect that beauty before hitting the open roads.. Whatever you do, congrats!!!

Drove my ZL1 home from OH to GA. It was an awesome drive. You have no idea how awesome the ZL1 is on the highway. And being such a fast purpose built car, it has few rivals on the highway. Ask that GT350 that tried me from a roll. LOL I say drive it ONLY if you are not scare of rock chips and road debris damage. I took a little bit on the way home. It was expected and I wasnt mad about it. Touched it up when I got home.

If this is going to be a garage queen, get it enclosed trailer'd back.

300 miles may seem a lot to many but I drive close to that amount to Vegas every other month. However, not in a new performance car.
I would consider getting it delivered but it just seems like a waste rather than enjoying the car, however it's during the "precious" break in period.

I may cut it in half and drive 100 and get it towed 200 and drive the rest of the 29 miles home

Congrats on the car. And remember, its a car and its entire purpose for existing is to be driven. No reason it can't be driven home or anywhere else. If you're worried about break in, you can always take the scenic route instead of the interstate.

No, I drive all my cars. I could give two shits about chips, they are going to happen..I could repaint or wrap in a pinch.
My biggest concern is the engine break in protocol in regards to constant speed.

Lol there is a scenic route via Pacific Coast highway too but it's about 30 mins longer. Lol. Decisions Decisions

Hello there! A few points:

1. I believe the break in calls for varying RPM, which you can achieve by varying speed, but can also achieve by changing gears. I just drove 1800 miles from Texas to SF Bay Area, and it was awesome (although also exhausting over only 3 days and after a red-eye flight!) Additionally, those long stretches should allow you to bed your brakes in properly!

2. Seeing as you are in California, make sure the car you’re purchasing is CA legal, with the necessary CA emissions sticker but also the copper-free brakes option. Those options are not typically selected by dealers outside of our state, and I’d hate for you to bout the car only to realize you have to get rid of it because the DMV will refuse to issue you the registration.

Best,

Geoff

I've been through this with a few out of state dealers, I believe most Camaros produced today are 50 state compliant (emissions wise). I'd had a dealer in IL willing to sponsor me for brake parts even though the car wasn't copper free. The DMV has no idea and there are no limitations for registration in this regard. My only issue was if the car needed warranty work on the braking system, I'd need to take out of state.
The car I'm looking at has the copper free setup and compliant ..
