M6 internal rubber shift boot covered in powder

Popped the trim off to tighten and loctite the shift knob as it was clacking, found this mess... Anyone else find this?

From past experience, the white powdery stuff is called "wax bloom" it is actually sometimes engineered into the rubber to protect the rubber from dry rot. It may also just be poor rubber formulation where some component has reached its solubility limit. This bloom isn't harmful to the rubber, and is easily dealt with. In light amounts it can be cleaned pretty simply with a damp cloth.

If it's not that then potentially it is a fungus, highly unlikely as the vehicle does not have too much exposure in that area for the fungus to penetrate. Plus you would be able to smell the mildew and it would need to be moist. To me it looks like wax bloom.

Interesting Mov Ov3r, definitely not fungus/mold. It looked like talcum powder, I didn't mess with it and just snapped the trim piece over it.

If purchased used, could be fire extinguisher powder.

I replaced the shifter medallion on my 2019 SS, and there was no presence of white powder on the rubber shifter boot.

Not coke or PKP, looks like the stuff I dust the inside of my MX bike tires with prior to putting in the tube, just a ton of it. Good to hear I'm not alone though.

I have a 2018 ZL1 M6, I didn't see any white powder when I replaced my shifter. But, I replaced my shifter at the 2 month mark, so maybe this happens gradually over time.

I suspect it was a woman wearing Johnsons Baby Powder who worked putting your Transmission in your car.
