ZL1 1LE Brakes/Rotors....Why not CC?
It seems many Z/28 features were duplicated in the new ZL1 1LE except for the brakes....Why is that, do you think?....It wouldn't have been surprising if they had used them as on the Z/28....They seemed to have been well received on the Z/28 for track duty....and would have been a good track up-grade for this 1LE....
Pretty sure the spy shots of this car at the Ring and elsewhere showed Carbon Ceramic rotors.....Just curious....Haven't heard much about the brakes yet...Maybe I missed it somewhere.... |

CC are too expensive. If the car was in the $100K range maybe they could justify it.

The press that I read all said the CC brakes weren't really needed. Which means the cost vs. advantage was just not enough.
Good to hear the regular ZL1 (still odd saying regular ZL1), brakes are up to the task of stopping the hyped up version. They're painted red... So maybe that's the upgrade.

The Z/28 would get CCB's when it comes out.

Probably mostly to cut on costs for a minor overall performance upgrade. The Gen 5 Z28 probably would have sold better without the added costs of CC brakes, IMO of course.

Two big reasons are likely.
#1: The Camaro team determined that the car performed as well as they needed with the large iron rotors. And the proof is in the pudding...stopping distances similar to last-gen Z/28...Motortrend recorded a 97ft 60-0 distance. Furthermore...tons of cooling elements, and raw heat capacity results in very little brake fade, if any. #2: At 64k starting price (with GG tax and destination included)...this ZL1 1LE will likely push the 71-73k range. Which is Z/28 prices...a risky move in terms of charging for a Camaro. If you add the CCM brakes, that will immediately push it into the 76-78k range. Z06 territory. |

This car is lighter than the Z/28 as well.
No doubt CC brakes would improve, but how much and at what cost? I thought I wanted them after my 1st drive in a Z/28 but sure don't want the replacement cost associated. |
