I was on that assingment durnig the Hatian boat crisis. We flew a lot of missions out of there. During the duty there we had the first one to log 20,000 flying hours. It is a great plane. We were using either 5.0 mustangs, or an SS for the chase car in those years.

I read/hear that the U2 is obsolete due to satellite technology. But I live near Beale AFB and occasionally see them. Something tells me we still use them for selected missions. True?

It is still flying. Much easier than Satellite's due to can be on location regardless of the earths position. Not bad for a plane designed on a cocktail napkin by the old boy's at the Skunkworks.

Had the opportunity to ride in the chase car on a deployment, but didnt take them up on it. No good reason why I didnt. They had GTOs and G8s.

I support these aircrafts all over the world. Here at Beale, we use Camaros, G8s, Chargers. In other locations we have used GTOs, EVOs, BMW M3. We use anything with enough power on demand to get the car down the runway.

Wow, I worked with/on both those platforms when I was in. I worked with the U2 (technically the TR-1 now, at least in Korea) while I was at Osan AB in Korea then I came back home and worked on the AWACS at Tinker. While I wasn't able to drive in Korea (had to be an E-5 or above to bring your car), I did own my '87 Camaro during that time and drove it at Tinker. Never used it to chase anything other than my shopmates though.

Thats awesome. I supported the Dragonlady for 10 years out at Beale and other locations.
