While there are a TON of state troopers, you usually don't have a problem if you slow down while passing them (assuming they are parked with the gun).
I try to keep it a 9 MPH over most of the time on the interstate here in Ohio unless everyone else is going faster because I once heard a State Trooper say 9 your fine and 10 your mine. However, some will get you for less.

I have to say that I am not a fan of NJ but the police/speeding law enforcement here seem much more reasonable than other states.

I agree VA is the worst I've seen. Ridiculous really.

Eastern shore MD pretty bad as well.

I was still working the road in the mid 90's when we had the "Reasonable and Prudent" DAYTIME speed limit.
The Troopers cruised the Interstate at 90-95 and we were pretty critical of anyone wanting to pass us. Overall I'd say we were all pretty lenient. I stopped and cautioned quite a few drivers at 110-125 mph. IIRC the fastest car I had during those years was a friends 930 Porsche at 144. I think the record high speed was like 160 or so...forget where and the details.

As the months wore on even we were all doing 100-110 mph. It was a bit addictive. Tough on tires, transmissions and motors though in the hot summer months. Saw MANY broken down vehicles whose owners had run low on oil or Trans fluid...they littered the roadways , especially in the summer months.

On the two lane roads it was mayhem. Limited view ahead, nowhere to go due to narrow roads, insane closure rates when passing, animals on the road, etc. A previously minor car vs deer accident now resulted in a totalled car, sometimes even rollovers and injuries.

Amazingly our death toll the first year or so was about normal...then it climbed and climbed, resulting in a numerical limit.

We are now 80 MPH on the Interstate, day & night. 70 MPH on two lane highways.

Our Camaro SS's when properly maintained can do 150 all day and night in its sleep and engine and trans temps will not be a hair above proper operating temps in the heat. Many cars out there, however, cannot.

But I can definitely see how wildlife can be a problem.

Whatever state you're in be careful for those unmarked vehicles: I've seen black, white and orange state troopers in Dodge Chargers with limo tinted windows that look nothing like 5-0 to me, and certainly not to the poor saps they had pulled over on the shoulder of the Interstate.

Same here in Ct. On interstates they let you go 10 over with no problem. I got
stopped locally for 51 in a 30 and only got a warning. (you got to be nice). I
got a 91 in a 70 in NY State on I-684. Got that reduced to a seat belt violation.
(also being very nice to the judge). That cop told me if I had a child in the car
going over 90 MPH, the car would be impounded on the spot. Glad I didn't.

A lot off this too in Oregon. Unmarked pick up trucks, normal sedans, etc. They are common out here and it always surprises me when I see those type vehicles with someone pulled over. Maybe they are seized cars converted to trooper cars are something, I don't know. But they abound out here.

Many places, anyway. Certain townships, perhaps not.

I295 near me slows down to 55 per the signs, but traffic rarely runs much below 70 - 75 except during rush hour.

VA's tough reputation is also based on their official stand on radar detectors. Used to live in that state, too, and you were usually OK for a few mph above the posted limit on the 3-digit county roads.

Military bases have the strictest speeding enforcement... 1 mph over the speed limit (aka speed max) and they can and will pull you over. Penalty is light though; 3 traffic 'violations' in a year before you're no longer allowed to drive on that base. Never heard of anyone doing anything really crazy though, at that point consequences would be very serious.

Otherwise; VA in my experience is worst, with MI and TX having the best speeds, least enforcement, and best LE leniency.

Have only been through OR once, but remember seeing State Troopers at the bottom of 6/7% grades shooting radar. Was not pulled over & had no real issues. But was nerve racking in a semi as I did not know if they allowed a couple miles an hour over or not.

GA State Troopers seem to roll down 75 running plates & radar from behind. That seemed to be far more common than sitting in a median watching people go by.

I just wish they would enforce more dangerous activities such as riding too close, weaving in and out of traffic, distracted driving, etc. That's what gets people killed. Speeding in general, without those other things, is not unsafe as long as it's reasonable.

I no longer feel a need to speed... almost.
