Here is what Oppenheiser says about the 4 cyl:
“Well under 6 seconds 0 to 60 mph,” Oppenheiser promises. “A lot of people will be surprised by how fast it is, especially our buddies across town.” Sounds like GM knows how to tune the T4, since they are giving up .3 L to the ecoboost in the Mustang and this was a direct shot at Ford. My apologies... habit. Haven't dealt with an in-line since the 70's

Other than for exhaust note, who the hell cares how many cylinders the engine has as long as it has the power and torque and is efficient?
The I4T has that in spades. Good for GM.

My sister has the I4 turbocharge ATS Cadillac. I didn't like the power level. I thought it was slow in a Cadillac. I did love the interior dash which is similar to the 2016 Camaro.
I can see GM going with the Camaro V6 Forced Induction in a couple years. The computer is already set up for it. |

They're talking about the fact that both the LT1 and the V6 feature cylinder deactivation -- shutting down 4 cylinders in the V8 and 2 cylinders in the V6 on occasion to improve fuel economy and functionally become V4s.
Just kidding... but it's one of those stopped-clock-being-right-twice-a-day sort of things. The Camaro will indeed offer a V4 -- two of them actually... sort of. |

You know, we would have died to have that much horsepower and torque back in the mid-late '70s and the '80s.
I had two different IROC Zs with the 5.7 V8s and they didn't have the balls this I4T does. Enjoy it, don't bash it.

My first Camaro (74) with a 350V8 had a whopping 145HP and 250lbft of torque...

If you're going to void your warranty immediately, what's spending a few extra thousand for a 550 HP V6 that is faster than an SS. |

I eventually traded it for a new '73 Z/28 (my first new car!) in dark red with white Rally stripes that had the L82 motor with 245 HP and the Turbo 400 trans. Loved that car! Still - less HP and performance than this new I4T and it loved stopping at the gas station; maybe 10-12 MPG at best (when I didn't have my foot in the 4 bbl). Amazing what 40 years of technology can do.

4.0 makes about what my 4th gen made out of the box. 305 vs 275. 315tq on an LS1.. yeah, she'll get some tweaks but I'm gonna be running two sets of tires and driving the car daily in the blizzards of michigan.
A Cammed V8 is nice, but I'll revisit a bruiser cruiser when I'm older. I'll put headers and a cam on a truck for my lopey V8 needs. lol |

ATS 2.0t vs CTS-V 12.98 @ 106 vs 12.79 @ 110 the CTS-V driver might need some more practice? Near as I can tell, this ATS guy spent about $2900 getting to this point. Tune, 3″ Intake, 3″ Catless DP, 67mm Turbo Upgrade, Snow Stage 2 Methanol/Water Injection System His best run that I've come across so far is 12.70 @ 108 w/ a 1.78 60' time. This is better than *most* (not all) of the run of the mill SC/Turbo v6 5th gen cars on camaro5, and at less than half the cost of the SC or turbo kit. Engine price comparison from 4 cyl base cost to v6 in various models ATS sedan, +$6095 to upgrade from the 2.0t to the 3.6 v6 (no trim changes) CTS Sedan, +$7625 to upgrade from 2.0t to 3.6 v6 (no trim changes) Impala (must upgrade to at least the 2LT to get the 3.6), +$3225(2LT from base cost), Colorado (v6 only available in certain trims and models), $1235 Buick Lacrosse is the only vehicle I can find with a $0 upgrade cost from 4cyl to 6 cyl. Mustang cost from base v6 to Ecoboost +1500 (base v6 to base ecoboost) +2641 (nearest I can build a "premium v6" to premium Eco boost upgrade) This is some pretty random data, but figure the cost to upgrade from 4cyl to v6 on the 6th gen will be a minimum of about $1500, and may run as high as around $3000.... If you want to go fast, you'd be money WAY ahead going with the 2.0t vs paying extra for the v6, and then adding a turbo or SC kit. For my $$, 4 vs 6, gimme the 4 cylinder! |
