Rear end grinding noise

Hey everyone. Havent been on here in a minute, glad to see its still active. So ive been hearing a grinding noise coming from my rear end so i thought i would change the rear differential oil but the noise didn’t go away. Anyone else experience this?

Did you notice any metal in the old gear oil? Are you sure it's not a rear hub bearing?

Yeah there was metal in the plug. Also the noise is more noticeable when going up hill. Very rarely do i hear it when its flat. Not sure about the rear hub bearing

Is it posi? Did you add friction modifier?

Posi unit can wear out and make strange noises.

He is saying you need a rear differential "rebuild" if it wasn't clear.

This, and the fact that you did NOT put any additive in there, will mess things up. I don't believe Mobil 1 diff fluid has any additives in it, and these LS diffs require it. Or they will make all sorts of noises and not work correctly.

Mobil makes our gear oil....the proper oil is the LS gear oil. Not sure if Mobil 1 has those same ingredients but from the sound of his symptoms his car is making noise driving straight. The gear oil issue comes into play when turning because the clutches in the differential are chattering and not slipping smoothly. His description of noise on accell and quieter off the gas along with metal in the fluid is classic pinion bearing failure. Side bearings tend to make noise all the time.
