Why are most comparisons to an SS and not a ZL1?

Yes I want one, no not bashing!

Yes I own a ZL1....but why are all most all comparisons done against the SS and not a ZL1 other than weight and lap time?

Example, the rear spoiler is unique to Z/28 and generates 440lbs more down force than an SS at 150mph? How does this compare to a ZL1?

Article picture is another example, more comparisons to an SS than ZL1?

I'd say because it's upgraded (built) from an SS. I believe the ZL1 was also compared to an SS when it came out.

True but SS was the only thing to compare for the ZL1 at the time. Z/28 has both I guess.

This!

I would disagree with previous posts. I think its because both a z/28 and ss are naturally aspirated and the zl1 is not

If you want a fair comparison between a zl1 and a z/28 then compare it with a supercharged z/28

I believe just like the ss the z/28 is a good foundation where as a zl1 is a fairly completed car.

The 1LE was also compared to the SS. The SS is the base, the benchmark.

They already compared the Z/28 to the ZL1 at their proving grounds which was done first.

Marginally better.

Where the Z/28 is built to excel, it does, with 75 less horsepower. Where it doesn't, doesn't matter to the Z/28.

Yep. They built up from an SS, rather than going 'sideways' from a ZL1. So everything that was done on the car had the SS as the baseline. So it follows logically that most information would be presented relative to the SS instead of the ZL1.

Yeah, 3 seconds a lap improvement on the 3 mile Milford course is pretty 'marginal'

For context, the ZL1 is only about 2 seconds a lap ahead of the 1LE.
