DIY painted engine covers?
Looking for people that took the time and effort to paint their engine covers.
What paint/brand/process was used? What problems ( if any ) did you have? Can you also post pic of finished cover? I just can't see spending several hundred for a new painted cover,,, anybody wanting to do this and save your money for other Mod's? Thanks |

I did mine a year or so ago. I used whatever brand Home Depot carries that closely matched Rally Yellow.
I decreased and cleaned the cover. Then agian, then agian, then agian. Then I think I did it again. After a few years on the engine, it's gets dirt and grime in all the crevices. The hardest part is masking it off along the crevices to get a nice crisp line between the painted parts and the black plastic you don't want to paint. After that the rest was easy. First I sprayed on thin coat of adhesion promoter, a couple light coats of primer and then a few coats of color. Lots of thin coats are better than a few heavy coats. Then I let it sit next to the patio door in the sun for several days. I then bought a black paint pen with a large tip and painted the "Chevrolet" lettering. I also picked up some chrome plated hex bolts to dress up the top of the cover.

Thanks.
No clearcoat was used. The enamel paint provided enough of a shine for me.

I took mine off my car last year and stored it at my parents house as my apartment doesnt have too much in terms of storage. My father decided to surprise me by painting the cover. He sanded the plastic down and primed it. Then painted it with House of Kolor Synergy Green Paint and Cleared it with High Temp clear
