Replacement clutch

Let's face it, I'm kind of a crappy stick driver, who knows why. My SS M6 only has 30K on it but it's only a matter of time before I fry the clutch. I don't 1/4 mile it but do drive it hard. If it matters, I will never have a high HP build.
What is a good, fairly basic aftermarket replacement clutch for these cars? How much should I figure one will cost me? How much should a reputable shop charge for an install? I'm older than most on here but never really drove a stick before this car so I have to ask:
1. How will I know when the clutch is dying, slippage of course but anything else?
2. Will it die a slow death or go out pretty quickly once it starts going bad?

Go to a flat, level parking lot.
Place the car in 4th gear, let out the clutch.
If it lags but starts moving forward= bad clutch,
if it catches and stalls= clutch is OK

Also consider bleeding and replacing the clutch fluid, this can help preserve a clutch as the flush removes all the old disintegrated particles of clutch disk.

I appreciate the pm's and hope my answers there have been sufficient and enlightening.

That said, I sent you a price on our new street twin. This will be the most forgiving of the aftermarket replacement units and it will hold the power you have and all of what you said you may do. The pedal effort is lighter than stock and it's on sale right now!

We've had quite a few customers get these in all cars we offer clutches for and so far not one single person has been unsatisfied.

Steve,
Thanks for the info and the pricing on the twin; sounds good. Cincy Speed is still around and I will call them regarding an install when I think it is looming. How much should I expect to pay a reputable shop for this kind of job?

So, anybody have an opinion on how much a good shop should charge for a clutch install, labor-wise?

Should be between $400-$500 for an install.

When I had a m6 I ran a zr1(ls9) factory gm clutch and loved it! Mine came from ADM, but LPE and many more sell them.

Give Craig from cincy speed a shout. If you order the parts with him, he will give you a good deal on the install.

Also, see post #10 in that thread that gives you insight on rebuilds for these units.

BY FAR the best deal out there, period!

Age is only a number!
You will know when the clutch is dying, if it's wear (if it last that long-depending on how you drive it), it would be slipping, if your hearing funny noises in that area then it could be other problems.

I just replaced mine 2 weeks a go with a Monster LT1-S twin, and couldn't be happier. Good price too.
The pedal is softer, due to the dual disc, it's just like stock, rather better then the stock clutch to me IMO.
No sticking pedal at higher RPM's, a I think it has an all together better feel to it overall.
If your interested talk to Steve at Monster clutch co., they hey have excellent customer support and he's very knowledgeable when it come to clutches.
