So, walked outside this morning, and my car had been gone through.

Am now short my 9500ix detector, and a $300 phone that I used for Torque app...

No other damage, and I think they just tugged on the door to see if it was unlocked. I must have left it unsecured last night. Yes, I know - Stupid me, but let's not debate that.

Anyone have suggestions for home security cam/DVR setups? I'm hoping to keep it under 500 for a setup and couple of cams. Would prefer wireless, but willing to go wired.

What do you use?!

monoprice.com has a really good selection. I bought mine there with 4 cameras and a DVR. You have to buy an external, or internal hard drive. That I got at walmart 1TB for around $50 i think.... Motion activated too. Check it out!

wow that is quite the deal.

Does the DVR have wireless connection capabilities (i.e. do I have to have it wired direct to my router in order to remotely view things, or can I connect it to my router wirelessly?) I can see that the cameras are hardwired, and I can deal with that. May be a pain to set up, but probably is a bit more reliable than a wireless camera....cheaper, too...

Yes, it is ethernet capable, and comes with a pretty good instruction booklet. I am in the process of hooking mine so I can monitor it from my iphone, but havent installed the software for my router yet...

You can download / view the user manual from the site I listed above...

If you have high speed internet just buy a few IP Cameras. I have 6 around My house. They can be setup to record on motion. I have an external 2 terabyte drive they record to. No need to buy a packaged deal and a dvr is not needed, just buy an external hd.
As long as your not too far from your router the wireless ones work fine.
I can view these from My Iphone anytime. No software is needed for that you just need the phone app and Know how to do port forwarding through your router.

Oh and My cameras are all PTZ. They can track motion and I can move them and zoom them from My phone as well.

Got any more specifics on your setup? Forwarding ports is incredibly simple, and this seems like a nice cheap solution...I have wireless coverage in all the areas that I would want cameras, and this could be my solution...

I have a few different Cameras. My outdoor ones (PTZ) were about 150 each. My indoor ones like 30 bucks.
The Cameras I got from Amazon. You can buy high end or low end. All are night vision but the outdoor ones only "see" about 20-25 feet at night.

The software I use is called I-Spy...excellent software and free.
The Iphone app I use is " IP cam viewer" it has a free and paid version. I got the paid but its cheap.

I have installed this type system at a lot of places including stores and commercial buildings.

DIY people seem to have a LOT of trouble with port forwarding. I even had one business that told Me his computer guy told him it couldn't be done because he was behind 2 firewalls.

Well, I have the Pit....actually a Chocolate Lab/Pit mix, and I believe that she tried to wake me up bc she heard something. I was finally able to get her off the bed and go back to sleep, only to wake up and realize that I should have 'listened' to her....

My plan now is to enable some type of remote notification when the cams detect motion, and me and the dog will go investigate with my buddies Smith and Wesson.

If you keep your phone in the bedroom they can email you on motion.

My dog must be under a different contract. He sleeps at My feet at night and does not want to be disturbed.

How about not leaving valuable stuff in-view (or in the car, period), and always locking your doors? Lesson learned? I know you don't want us to talk about that, but it's the easiest and cheapest solution to crimes of opportunity.
