Well I'll be damned!!!
Well i don't want to get to excited but damn. Just today my buddy and I swapped tires, I took his 18" heritage and he took my 19" 1lt. What I am so excited about is on an average day I would average 22.5 to 23.5 MPG one way to work. Well today with the 18" rims on the way home I got as high as 30.1, and it settled around 29.3 MPG. I would say pretty impressive, considering when driving on I-5 I never, never broke 30 MPG if lucky I would get about 27 on the interstate, so I am pretty stoked.

I don't think a speedometer calibration would be needed. I swap 18" heritage wheels in the winter and 20" wheels in the summer and the speedometer isn't affected. But I sure can't explain a 7 mpg gain!?! Are the 18" tires from the factory?

Unless the tires are not stock on the 18" wheels I don't think there would be a speedo calibration issue. I have the 19" wheels with all seasons and the heritage wheels with winter tires on them and don't see any difference in mileage.
Could be that the tires aren't stock size and thus the speedo is off, but who knows. Also was it just one trip? Could have something to do with that. See what your mileage is after a week, if it is still way better or not. |

Only way to tell is to know the height of both setups. What are the tire sizes for each?

If they are stock they are considered the same.

the rim size doesn't matter here, what matters is the actual tire size.

So I was reading this and my first thought was......who gives a crap about MPG. Then I thought, it matters to some. And maybe the gain does come from the smaller wheel, sure. Honestly, I bought my SS two years ago, and fortunately, have never thought once about MPG. I am impressed with how GM has produced a Hot Rod that does very well with today's gas prices. I guess I am such a gear head, from age sixteen with a 70 Chevelle, I spent every dime on gas............because I couldn't keep my foot off the floor. Now, 42, nothing has changed. I drive my ride everyday, like it was no tomorrow. I mean, I get it, for those guys crunching the numbers. But for me, I tach it in every gear, burn it when there are no cops in sight, and roll it on the interstate past all those ponies who wish they had a dad who loved a Chevy!

Mark a spot on the tire (tape on sidewall)
Mark a spot on the ground to line up with tape on tire. Roll car until exactly one revolution of tire and tape is exactly on bottom. Measure for both sizes. See how much it is different. |

For mpg, the tread pattern has some effect but mostly it's the size of the contact patch. The higher the rolling resistance the less mpg. Wheel size play a role only when driving in town not on the highway.

I'd guess a combination of both. BUT, tire sizes will be the biggest tell.
