But I hear everyone that owns a Corvette outside the forums refer to their car as a Vette.

Go on Google and ask "What is a Vette". Then ask Google "What is a "Vert". One you get the "Shortened name for Corvette" The other you get a vegetation bearing green leaves. As mentioned earlier.. Vert is just being lazy typing on a forum...

And different parts of the country as well. It's like when I visit family up North and they call soft drinks pop! Around here everyone calls it Coke and then what type of Coke? Sprite, Root Beer...etc. LOL.

I know I heard vert when I was showing my C4 Corvette back in the mid to late 90s (almost 30 years ago) but, the Corvette forums were around then as well and it could have started with all the short hand online as someone else stated.
