Front Two Deflectors

Apologize upfront if this is a noob question but I did not see an answer in using the search feature so here goes.

Trying to install my front RPI splitter on my 2018 SS but there are two deflectors in the way. The instructions doesn't say to remove but in the pic they aren't there. I don't believe so but If I remove them will it affect the car in any way.

Excited to install. Looking forward to all the answers.

Thank you!

Many people remove them with or without a splitter. I left mine off when I installed an OEM splitter.

I also removed them when I installed the GM splitter.

There is most likely some detrimental aerodynamic impact (high pressure air pocket in front of tires, resulting in a little more drag and lift at higher speeds), but the splitter should mitigate it to some extent, and these giant rubber deflectors look so hideously ugly that I decided to leave them off.

Maybe a ZL1 style narrow diffuser is what we should settle for, but I'm not sure mounting would be possible on the SS without replacing a lot of the front underbody panels and covers.

If someone has exact scientific information on how much of an impact these deflectors or spats actually have, I'd very much appreciate it.

Not trying to steal the thread but these deflectors are the 2 under the front ends of the bumper. They look like they just direct air around the front tires. Are they really not needed? Because I cringe every time I pull my car in and out of the driveaway because they scrape and are starting to look horrible. If they aren't needed for normal everyday car driving and just some aerodynamic efficiency they are coming of tonight!

A couple thoughts on this topic:
  • The SS 1LE comes with a front splitter and does not come with the two air deflectors in front of the tires.
  • When you install the track ducts, the owners manual specifically states to leave the two air deflectors off

So with that said, if they are not on there for track purposes (since manual states to take them off when the track ducts get installed), they are likely on there for a slight aero improvement to improve fuel economy ever so slightly.

Oh yes, I forgot that the 1LE might not even have these in the first place. That seals the deal for me then, thanks vtirocz

Thanks for all the input. Removed the dams (leaving off) and installed the splitter (RPI Designs) ... fits like a glove!
