Get more miles on your ZL1, Greg! I think you will see a difference once the engine gets broken in with more miles.

I guess the tall gears in the M6 manual trans just make it seem to pull less aggressive than the previous A10 ZLE that I owned. Maybe I need to go back to an A10… Anyone with a low mile A10 ZL1 or ZLE looking for a M6 car???
Glad to hear nothing is wrong with your car. This is what I was trying to articulate earlier in the thread. The A10 and M6 make for quite different personalities in the ZL1. The first 5 gears of the A10 are really short and shift super quick. Not only is it faster, it feels faster.

However, the M6 is much more engaging though. The issue is that tall gearing that is hard to appreciate on the street but all the torque is nice since it will pull in any gear. You will notice the LT4 performance more on the higher speed pulls but you obviously are looking over your shoulder when doing those.

I think you should go drive an SS 1LE with the M6 and see what you think. If the shorter gearing and little less weight of the SS makes you happy then you can trade the ZL1 for an SS1LE and not take a big hit. After owning all these Camaros, the SS 1LE is the sweet spot IMO. The A10 is great but I just get bored automatics in a sports car.

I completely agree that the two are very different cars. My first ZL1 was the A10 and there are things about it I did like, mainly the quick shifts, but I love the manual trans in my 1LE. Not only does it make driving the car more fun, but the transmission itself is phenomenal (especially after swapping out the OEM fluid for some Amsoil).

Yes, you were correct, I think the gearing compared to the A10 is throwing me off. I actually owned a 2022 SS 1LE with a manual… I thought the M6 ZL1 and the M6 SS 1LE had the same gearing? Am I wrong?

No, they are different, which is why you can reach 62mph in 1st gear on a ZL1 M6. 83mph in 2nd, 113mph in 3rd. This tall gearing mated to the 3.73 rear keeps the torque from the LT4 in check and allows for nice long pulls, which are ideal on a road course. However, imo, they are not as much fun on the street since it is hard to wind out the gears and not go to jail. Your SS 1LE M6 was geared a little lower so you would still get the seat of the pants acceleration even though you are down on power vs. the ZL1. It is also a little lighter. I think 1st gear on the SS tops out around 47mph, 2nd gear in the low 70mph range.

FYI, the C7 Corvette Z51/Grand Sport M7 is geared even lower than the TR6060, which improves acceleration a little more and IMO makes it more fun to row on the street. Watch the clip from Jason on the Blackwing starting at 15:20 below as he points out what I am saying.

Thanks for the great info Raptor! So the C7 Grandsport is geared even lower than the SS 1LE??? That sound like a fun car, maybe I need to look into that… I assume the C7 Z06 would be geared higher than the Grandsport?

Not to nitpick, but I see 558.7 or 559 whp. Was another run hitting 578? Still, around 560 whp is normal. Thinking back to your A10 ZL1…2nd in the A10 is equal to 1st in the M6, 3rd in A10 is very close to 2nd in the M6. So it’s essentially one gear higher. If you’re thinking 2nd in the M6 should feel like 2nd in the A10 it won’t, it’ll feel like 3rd.

Yes, the C7 Corvettes in Z51 and Grandsport trim were geared slightly lower than the base Stingrays. It is not dramatic but it is noticeable. The Z06 and ZL1 use the LT4 so the gearing is engineered to match the power level and manage the torque. These cars are already traction limited, with lower gearing you would roast the tires even more. All these cars we are discussing are overpowered for the street, the only way to fully appreciate them is by getting them on the track.

The C7 Z06 has the same gear ratios as the Camaro ZL1.
