Not sure, i'm certain someone will chime in but they made almost 300k 1979 Camaros alone with probably a third of those being Z28's.

Yes the mid-70s through early 90s were the prime years for Camaro production. They needed two plants at full production dedicated to them (and the Firebird F-body cousin) at one point (Van Nuys California and Norwood Ohio).

At the peak of the Malaise era, when all car companies were hamstrung by emission regulations and hadn't yet created the technology to get back the power of pre-emission motors while meeting emission standards, GM did a stellar job of keeping the Camaro (and Firebird) relevant, interesting, and in demand. For a while it might have lost the tire-shredding and cam-lope thump of the early muscle-car era Camaros but they made up for it by making a fantastic chassis and suspension for the era and keeping the car fun to drive in different ways.

Sad that the 1979 was number one in sales...

I always like the 1970, I remember seeing those when they were new

Uh, there were no Camaros built from 2003-2009... (2009 had some 2010 Model Year built but there were no 2003-2009 model year Camaros)

For comparison, Ford has produced 9,787,161 Mustangs through 2020, and another 96,746 total 2021/22.

https://www.cjponyparts.com/resource...roughout-years

In some years, Chevy did outsell Ford, but with 1.3 million out the door before the 1st Camaro was sold, it was mathematically impossible for Chevy to catch up. Ironic considering GM essentially created the muscle car segment with the GTO.

pony cars and muscle cars aren't exactly the same though. The 64 GTO was 2 Feet longer than a Mustang.
