Question What can my ZL1 do?

Gents, where can I go to understand what this thing can really do?* This morning I took a road that has an exit curve onto a different road.* The curve is rated at 30mph and I took that curve at…well, let’s just say the accelerometer on the HUD read .72.* Scared the crap out of me and I got the definite sense that the beast was laughing at my fear.

We have a local dragstrip (Houston, royal purple), but it’s a drag strip.* Any thoughts about where to go within a couple of hours drive near Houston that has a safe place to lose grip, test limits, get one’s learn on?

The car has more in it than almost 99% of divers will be able to tap into.....

Check some of the local road course tracks in your area.
Up here in Michigan, we have a track on the western side of the state called Gingerman's.

It's the perfect track for someone like us to take our ZL1 to find out what it can do. The track itself only has barriers in very few locations at the track. with large area of grass around the majority of the track so even if you do lose control and run off the track, you won't be in danger of hitting anything.

I finally took mine out there a week or two ago. That particular day, they divided us into three groups, advanced, intermediate, and novice.

Since this was my first time out, I was a novice.

A big advantage was the ability to hire an instructor for the day for only $50.

The first time out, the instructor drove my car with me as a passenger, primarily to show me the track and what line I'm 'supposed' to take around each corner. Then it was my turn to drive with him as a passenger and instructor.

Depending on your instructor, you could have him drive your car with you as a passenger and show you what your car CAN do.

That's what I'm hoping for the next time I go there.

To the first part of OP question:
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=284677
It can do far more than .7 g's. Depends on tires, tire temp, is the corner banked, does it have bumps and gravel or moisture, antifreeze or oil on it?
Yes, that is one of the things that impressed me with the ZL1. It's complete composure at those g levels on a good road. I have had cars like the IROCs and WS6 firebirds that could corner flat but their solid rear axle and overall abilities were far less. They would require throttle to keep from understeering and the rear wanted to dance out in the uneven corners. At the same speeds the ZL1 doesn't even slightly lose traction. The mag ride and better tires make a big difference also.

There was a Gen6 ZL1 at Northstar Dragway, 1/8 mile, last weekend.

It was averaging low 7s that day with good air.

I would guess you'd be a little slower.

Reach to to the local Porsche and Corvette clubs and start doing HDPE. Or look at the PDX of the SCCA and NASA. Personally I have been very happy with the Porsche events. They are the best run out here.

Be careful on those Goodyear G2's until they're fully heated up. You may end up with a pile of scrap metal. FYI: Check out the fast list on the forum. Several members have consistently run 11.5's-11.7's in the 1/4 (bone stock). That's cookin'!!!

I've always said that about all the newer Vettes, the Z and the 1LE. They have so much technology, bulletproofing and engineering right from Chevrolet that most will never come close to its pinnacle of attitude. "Drive It Like You Stole It"......

I've hit 1.14Gs on the "fun meter" on city streets. I was doing, uh, 15mph, yeah that's the ticket, 15mph.
