What to Buy I4 or V6 as my first Camaro
Hello guys, I know there hasn't been much said or much information on the I4's yet but just wanted to get some input on this. Unfortunately I can not afford a SS so I am between these 2 different options. I would be purchasing either vehicle with as the 1LT Trim. So what do you guys think so far even with the limited info on the I4. I have never had a Camaro but as soon as the revealed the 6th Gen I can't stop thinking about it. I would probably not me doing any mods for the first year or so. Thanks in advance.
P.S. I would be adding the RS Package along with NPP Exhaust. |

Thats a tough one. So many things to consider. MPG, Tunability, Weight. The list goes on and on. The 4 banger will be easy to squeeze power out of fairly easily. The V6 will have a much more exciting exhaust note and will be a bit faster out of the box.
Go drive them both and then go with your gut! You could overthink this for months. All the best, Jared Royce 888.308.6007 |

The dealership I was ordering from had a 2lt for $39,000 and a 2ss for $41,000. Happily paid the extra $2k for the extra engine. My decision was made on the best deal I could get.

I currently have a 2011 V6, I would go for the V6 for the extra power out of the box. However if you're concerned about MPG, the I4 might be a better choice for you.
If I were to go with a 1LT with a V6 I would be sure to get the dual mode exhaust. Watch this video to see why.

NPP is not available on the turbo-four.

I am looking to get a 2017 1LT with the Turbo I4. I see this engine as superior not only because it's cheaper, but because of the following reasons. The Turbo I4's torque band is higher and wider than the V6. I wouldn't be redlining this engine to get all of its strength, like the V6. Sure the V6 has the benefit of being naturally-aspirated and having the available NPP, but those are the only benefits I see. Another thing you might be considering is the fuel economy of the engine. In addition, if you were to get a manual Turbo I4, it will end up coming with no-lift shift, which might be a plus for you. Sure the car isn't an SS, but it's still a Camaro. Plus, you'll get to hear the sweet sound of the turbocharger if you're into that.

The current V6 is awesome. I think I read somewhere that the i4 is very close to performance as the V6. Even though I have a 2SS in the twlight zone I am still going to test drive the I4 and V6 just to see what they are like and how they compare to my V6 now.

Thanks for the input guys. I forgot about the NPP exhausr not being an option for the I4. As of rightnow I am really leanning more towards the V6 but I for sure want to test drive the I4 as well. It's going to come down to that. Thanks again guys.

Test drive definitely the only way to know for sure, but since you asked for opinions between the turbo four or V6, I'd get the V6 100 times out of 100. Especially this V6, because it sounds freaking amazing.

I know some turbo four orders have been entered but have any been accepted (2000)?

The thing you have to give to the 4 cylinder is not only weight but weight distribution. Inline engines have a lower center of gravity than V configuration. The T4 should have a great feel.

My opinion, but I would only go with the T4 if I knew I wanted to put a stout tune and bolt-ons on the car and shoot for 375 - 400TQ and did not care about the warranty.
Otherwise, its V6 all day. This is what I would lean towards. I loved my modded 2010 Camaro V6, and this one will be better right out of the box than my modified car was, plus with the NPP exhaust, it sounds great! Down the road, if you do plan to mod the car with some bolt ons and a tune, the V6 should still be easily capable of 350 - 360 HP with just all the basic bolt ons and a tune (although, none of those mods exist yet...it will take time). If you do the math, a 6th gen V6 with 350+ HP has almost the same HP/weight ratio as a 2015 Camaro SS automatic. But again...to be fair, if you want easier modding/more power on a budget, the Turbo 4 is the way to go.

If you choose the LTG for the future mod potential, be aware that the pistons are still cast alloy so there is only so much easy power you can get out of it before it starts getting expensive.
The LGX comes out of the box with more horsepower and has features like start/stop and AFM (automatics only) for increased efficiency. The exhaust sound is also better and with the right catback or the factory NPP option, it will sound awesome...like an exotic car or something. I don't think you can go wrong with either powertrain. If you plan modding it to increase power, the LTG will be hands down the better choice. However, if you just plan on keeping it relatively stock and the V8 is not an option, then the LGX V6 would be a good choice. |
