Apres Runway 2016

After a brief, one year hiatus...

It's baaaack!

The C5 folks attending the 5th Annual Race the Runway event in Smith's Falls this August are once again invited to debrief at the Ripcard Ranch post race. As usual the barby will be fired up and refreshments will be served. Stories, tall and short, will be heard.

Karen and I look forward to seeing you all and have a few laughs.

PS Please post in this thread if you're attending to help us plan the food.

Rick.

Still some room to get in on the action. I'm surprised, actually. The event is usually filled within a few days of registration opening. They have upped the number of cars though.

Just about a month away now!

Here is a little note from the organizers.

Race the Runway 2016 Drivers,

Race day is coming up fast! Below is some information that will help ensure you are ready for the event. Please take a moment to review it and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

1. Friday evening (August 12th) we will be hosting a pre-registration event at the airport. If you want to skip the Saturday morning registration line up, meet some of the other drivers, get a feel for the venue, and enjoy some food courtesy of the Lions Club, please come by the airport between 5pm and 9pm on Friday, August 12th and we’ll get you set up. Also, we will randomly select a few drivers to conduct high speed test runs as part of our dress rehearsal!

2. Important Race Day Timings:

a. DRIVER REGISTRATION IS OPEN FROM 7:00 - 8:00am SATURDAY AUGUST 13th. There will be plenty of hot coffee and breakfast will be served starting at 7:15

b. There is a MANDATORY DRIVERS MEETING at 8:15am on Race Day. This meeting will review the staging process, safety protocols and the speed run configuration.

c. FIRST HIGH SPEED RUNS begin at 9:00am

3. There is a waiver that you will need to sign in order to drive on the runway. This will be included in your driver’s package. It’s a great bedtime read if you’re having trouble sleeping.

4. Volunteers! This event is 100% operated by volunteers – nobody gets paid anything for helping out. Everyone is doing their absolute best but nothing is ever perfect. Please be respectful of the folks that make this whole thing possible.

5. Vehicle inspections will be conducted during registration and may be re-conducted at the discretion of Race the Runway staff. The inspection will look for any issues that might compromise safety of your vehicle during the race (loose trim and improper tire inflation have been common issues in previous years). One important element of this inspection is confirmation that your vehicle’s tires are appropriately speed rated for the event. Note that many DoT drag street radials are not rated for the types of speeds sustained at Race the Runway. (Mickey Thompson Tires has a useful tech bulletin on the subject which can be fou nd here. Please ensure you vehicle is equipped with appropriate speed rated tires.

6. If you have not sent us a picture of your car yet, or you wish to send us an updated picture, please do so ASAP. These pictures may appear in the event program and will be displayed on the electronic scoreboards and in the RtR web app (we will send out the link to access the app once it is ready).

Your Race the Runway Team

Depends on their speed rating. If the manufacturer doesn't rate them for your top speed, you're probably better off not running them Jeff. Save them for the quarter or eight mile stuff.

Had a little time on my hand...

Couldn't find anything on speed ratings for these tires...

ET Street S/S - DOT RACE TIRES
A street tire that can be driven on the track....

ET Street S/S from Mickey Thompson is a high performance street to strip tire with radial construction, R2 compound and more; 15- to 20-inch fitments.
  • D.O.T. approved for street use.
  • Equivalent Tread Void as the ET Street Radial II, redistributed for improved hydroplane resistance while providing plenty of tread contact for excellent dry traction.
  • Proven R2 compound, the same proven compound used on the quickest "drag radials" on the planet provides superior traction at the strip while little or no burnout required.
  • Tubeless construction provides lead-free seal without the expense and hassle of tubes.
On the racetrack DO NOT use starting pressures below 11 psi.
Recommend pressures for:
P295 and larger sizes: 12-16 psi
P275 and smaller sizes: 14-18 psi

BURNOUTS- FOR MOST APPLICATIONS
The length of your burnout will be dictated primarily by the ambient and track conditions. The hotter the temperatures, the shorter the burnout. When the temps get cool, a longer burnout will be necessary. Ideally you want the tire temp to be within 15 degrees of the track temperature on the launch. When the track temps exceed 120 degrees, it is always best to keep your tire temps on the lower side. Here are some additional tips for maximizing the performance of your M/T racing tires.

1. First pass of the day will be your longest. After that follow the guidelines of #2 and #3 stated below.
2. Automatic transmissions and Bias tires with Softer compounds: First pass or two, fairly hard burnout relative to ambient conditions. After that a light burnout should be sufficient.
3. Standard transmission and Radial tires: Typically shorter burnouts are better. A light burnout, enough to haze the tires, then stage immediately.
4. No dry hops. This does nothing to improve traction, and in some cases can have a negative effect.

Here is the link to the Mickey Thompson tech bulletin.

http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/tech.php?bulletin=g8

And here is the important bit lifted from the bulletin: A Mickey Thompson produced dot tire without a speed rating has a max highway speed of 85 mph.

ET Street R from Mickey Thompson is a D.O.T street legal drag tire...and its radial is available in P255/50R15 all the way to P305/45R18. Use it for a fast automatic car. Like 8-second fast.
So I'm sure it does more than 85 MPH!!!!
Weird..
