Are we being lied to about the 6th gen?

GM has made a big deal about the 6th gen being lighter and smaller than the 5th gen. The curb weight is up to 397 lbs lighter which is a good thing. However, I think the average is around 150-200 lbs or so depending on options.

The overall dimensions are a little smaller. About 2" less for the wheelbase and about an 1" less for the width. However, the 1" reduction in overall height seems to be misleading. It seems the aspect ratio of the tires are 1" less than the 5th gen tires. So, the impressive 1" reduction in overall height is mainly due to the tires, not the body. Thoughts?

Height is the distance from the ground, regardless if it's the tires or something else. Not sure how that's misleading?

Also, I've move this topic on the "Camaro6" side of the site where you might get some more input.

I've only heard 200lbs lighter being advertised by GM? (from model to model)

Sure felt like my 6th gen was shorter.

They will always give and or quote the best number available to make the consumer and journalists go 'holy crap they dropped a ton of weight' but the reality is the average drop will be in that 150-200 pound range. I think it's misleading, or come across as misleading, because they want to wow everyone.

If they came out and said 'we dropped 150 pounds off the car' and didn't say that was the average weight drop no one would think it's significant. Even though it is, but it's all about the wow factor.

Put a Gen 5 and Gen 6 rear to rear and open the trunk. That, above all else, is the biggest holy crap! moment for me from my 2010 to my 2016.

I've also only really seen 150-200lbs when comparing a 5th Gen 2SS to an equally equipped 6th Gen SS.

There's nothing really being lied about and owned both, I can tell you that Gen 6 is very noticeably a smaller car. It's not Miata smaller, but it's not "I gotta break out a ruler" smaller either.

As I have not yet taken the time to look at one, what is the difference?

2015 SS: 3908
2016 SS: 3685
Difference: 223 lbs

2015 LT: 3729
2016 LT (V6): 3435
Difference: 294 lbs

2015 ZL1: 4120 lbs
2017 ZL1: ???
Difference: At least 200 lbs lighter (per Chevy)

I don't know where these "150-200 avg" quotes are coming from...

You kinda need to experience it in person. It's the design of the trunk opening, the size of the trunk lid itself, the interior design and space and the realization of the overall width of the space. Just meander over to a local dealer with one and see if you can pop the lid on it.

Independent tests and reviews make the car (and it's predecessors) an open book.. Nobody can lie about this stuff and get away with it for long so why would they?

Honestly it doesn't matter if it is 150 or 250 pounds to me. All I know is the 2016 Camaro SS is around .7 faster in the 1/4 mile than the 5th gen, or roughly 6 or 7 car lengths.

The largest weight reduction number, whatever that is, is based on the brand new 4 turbo weight, which they did not have any 4 cylinder to compare it to from last gen, so they took the weight of the last gen 1LT (which is a V6) and new 4 turbo, subtracted and voila...there's your largest weight reduction over last gen.

A little bit of marketing hype, but nothing that I even blinked an eye for.

My opinion is the 6th gen is smoother ride and feel than my 5th gen.
Maybe it's just me or the car is new.
What the hell, did I just spend money for the same car?

Now you make me confuse!
