As a former Army helicopter pilot, I cringe every time I hear about a bird going down. I've lost two pilot buddies of mine over there.

As far as the press reports go, most of the deaths are from SEAL Team 6, the same team responsible for killing Osama bin Laden. Reports also indicate that the members involved in the Abbottabad raid were not killed, but those who were killed represented an equally important part of the Navy. They were called to rescue others allied fighters in the area.
The deaths also include 7 Afghan special forces troops and 1 civilian interpreter. It is always devastating to see casualties in war. These are particularly troubling because they include some of the world's greatest fighters. Their deaths will not be in vain.

The flag flies 24 hours a day in front of my home. I think regularly of those that protect us, not only in our armed forces, but also those who serve the public in law enforcement, fire protection and rescue. May these heroes rest in peace and may there be some how, some way, comfort for their loved ones at home.
