Looking for track tire recommendations for ZL1

Looking for a wheel/tire setup for doing track days on a 2017 ZL1. I plan to do approximately 3-4 per year. I burned through my stock tires last year and not looking to do that again. I was thinking that I could do a 19 inch set up and something that I would be able to rotate around, but i'm really just looking for ideas here. I'm not sure if they would be track only tires that would need to be trailered to a track or a good track/streetable tire that I could drive to the track.

Appreciate any input out there.

I'm in the same boat. I've read lot's of threads on the subject and I'm still undecided. I'm on my second set of stock tires with less than 5,000 miles. I think the track performance is really good after a couple laps, but I can't help but wonder if there is a better alternative.

I've been thinking about a 19" setup so that I can try the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G3Rs from the ZL1 1LE. Also, the Michelin Sport Cup 2s are hard to overlook.

I just wasn't sure if having a different diameter tire would throw off any of the traction management systems, etc.. I posted the question in "Ask Al", but I seriously doubt it'll ever be selected.

You're going to have to make a decision on your goals. Your post feels like it's coming from a few different directions. The Supercar 3's are an overall excellent match for the FE4 suspension, and their wear rate is perfectly acceptable, biased to the side of quite good for their grip level.

If you want more tread life, that means you needs to sacrifice grip. Maybe a Pilot Sport 4S? That tire will tolerate track days and still give good street life, and it's available in stock tire sizes.

Given you also have a ZL1, going to a square 305 setup that's rotatable is possible, but not inexpensive. You'll need 11" wide et41 with 30mm spacers up front. That means something custom like BC Forged et al.

You can also go for an OEM ZL1 1LE setup, 19x11 front and 19x12 rear with the Supercar 3R. You'll have about half the wear life as stock though, and it doesn't sound like you're willing to trade grip for life.....unless you're able to bring a 2nd set of tires to the track. At that point however, stop tickling it and just go to Hoosier R7's or Pirelli DH slicks.

So it really comes down to what you want. Do you want less grip for more tread life? The same grip you have now with the Supercar 3's? Go ZL1 1LE and trade tread life for more grip? Or bring a 2nd set to the track with a chase car or trailer?

I'm starting to lean on the michelon pilot sport cup 2s, which looks like they're around $1800 at tire rack. However, I did see a nice price on the michelon pilot sports, (around $1,300 total), so now i'm really torn on how much difference in life there will be between the pilot sports and the cup 2s, especially if it's only a $500 difference.

It seems like you have an idea, but you arent quite clear about what it is. Do you want a 19" track only wheel set that you will use 3-4 times per year? A track only tire that will last longer than the G3?

If I am understanding your question correctly, I would 100% just stay with what you have. The G3's in stock sizes are a pretty awesome tire and work very well on this chassis. For 3-4 days a year I wouldn't waste the money on a second set of wheels and tires. You have a big, heavy, fast car. Tires will wear out quickly on it. Understand that that is part of the game when you want to track a ZL1.

When I had my SS 1LE I got about 4000 miles and 5 track days out of the stock G3 tires, that's a pretty damn good wear rate and you will be hard-pressed to find anything that will grip as well, and last as long. A Pilot Sport Cup 2 will last half that, I've seen a Cup 2 cord in 6 sessions on multiple occasions and I expect my G3R to maybe last two track days...

I love the Cup2's. They're fast and I can get several track days out of them and then sell em off with 70% tread left. I get rid of them because they cycle out and are worthless thereafter if you track for time. That said, I know most guys dig the GY's and the R's are supposed to be great once heated up. This is a coors / bud light subject.

Do the Potenza re-71r come in stock sizes? I hear a lot of good things about them - just ordered a set for my mini. Havent been a potenza fan... ever, but a good friend who tracks a lot says this is the tire to get over the pilot sports.

RE71R's come in 285/35/20 or 295/30/20, nothing bigger in 20's. I run 295 square, the tires are awesome.

I would suggest 305/325s for ZL1 and 650hp, not only because of the additional grip but also because of the higher load rating. OEM ZL1 1LE wheels/tires might be a good option as well as NT01s/R888Rs.

I never had any issues driving NT01s in the summer or to track days. They suck at rain of course (I hear R888Rs are better for rain)

This is no where near being a track tire... They're also terrible on the new Mustang because the sidewall is so soft.

Those are OLD tires. 2013 production, not sure how tire rack can even sell those.

Yes, but Tire Rack has a nice climate controlled facility. I’m not worried about the condition of a 2013 production tire from their stock. The tires will likely perform just as a 2017 production tire. Only one way to find out...going to the track in two weeks. My brother in law purchased 2012 production Michelin Pilot Sport Cups from them and they were perfect on track.
