Do you want a ZL-1 or a Z-28 in 2012?

This is early in the I want stage...but would you rather have the ZL-1 or Z-28 in the 2012 year model. I am thinking the Z-28 in Boss 302 vein and the ZL-1 compared with the Shelby. Both Chevy's are my favorites!!

I was thinking about this yesterday. Well lets say the all things are equal, and that means that the Z28 is to the ZL1 what the Boss 302 is to the GT500, like you said.

It seems that the Boss 302 offers near GT500 straight line performance, but with greater handling and a much more road course oriented chassis and suspension as well as the GT500's track crudentials. It would seem that for $43k you are getting a steal compaired to the $50-55k GT500. therefore the Boss 302 seems as if it is the better value.

So, lets say the Z28 is the same thing, a car that offers near ZL1 performance in a straight line but is more road course and handling oriented. I would seem that if the Z28 was anywhere from $7-10k less than the ZL1 it would be a a steal in comparison to the ZL1, similiar to the Boss 302.

Now a couple of things would have to be determined before we could say it is the type of steal that the Boss 302 is in comparison. Because the ZL1 has such advancements in technology for a Camaro being brought to it that the Z28 may not be as much of a steal.

See, I feel that with the Mustangs the GT500 doesn't have much more to offer versus the Boss 302 besides forced induction, better sound system/navigation option, and the idea of having over 500+ HP. The Boss 302 has an adjustble suspension, Track Key programming, beefed up differential, quad exhaust, and for a car under 500 HP it isn't that far off the GT500's straight line pace. The Boss 302 seems to be offering more for less.

Where with the ZL1 I feel that with it's Magnetic Ride Suspension, Performance Traction Management System, Dual Mode Exhaust System, Short Throw Shifter, LSA Engine, Recaro/Alcantra Suede Style Seats, Beefed Up Brakes & Rotors, etc... it has so much more to offer to the Camaro enthusiast than the SS that we need to know exactly what the Z28 is to the ZL1 before we decide which is a better value.

But, like you said if all things are equal. I think if I'm buying a Camaro I personally would rather have the ZL1 just because of the cache' feel it brings to the lineup, and I also feel that the Z28 would not have the technology such as MRS and PTM which would make the divide between the Z28 and ZL1 greater than that of the Boss 302 and GT500.

And in the Mustangs case, if I were purchasing one, I think the Boss 302 is a much better value, and it is almost irrational not to think it would be the better option in most cases. So, I would probably opt for the Boss 302. I can say that with confidence as of now because with the Camaro all we have to compare to the ZL1 is an SS and vice versa.

Hope that answers your question!

Hmmm don't know. The ZL1 is one bad machine. It sounds like its more exclusive too and 20 years from now that means it might be more valuable.

Most likely I'll be ready to buy in 2013. It will be either one or the new Vette. I have a real problem spending 50k+ on car with a solid axle-more to life than the 1/4 mile.

It would appear the Boss is a great value at $40,000.

The ZL1 may very well be also, but at $50,000+....Its hard not to wonder why chevey cant offer the same value/performance in a camaro?

Im betting the introduction of the Boss is the beginning of the end of Shelby...Just sayin.

I'm waiting on the Z/28

The local Ford dealer has a Boss on the showroom and that's one mean looking car.

I do not see why they would up the power with a z-28 that would move it to solid vette territory. I think the zl1 will be the fastest camaro of all time. CAFE requirements become much higher a few years out from now. But it is all -. just a guess.

However, I promised my niece I would give her my 2011 Camaro early next year, thus my choice between a ZL1 or a non existent z-28, IS A ZL1.

The differance is a pulley change & tune on the ZL1 will probably net you another 100hp and 100 lbs of tq, try that with the Z-28.

Considering that I wanted the Z28 the moment it was released, I was disappointed when it was announced that it was going to be called ZL1. However, after I considered everything, I realized that the ZL1 had everything that I wanted in the Z28 EXCEPT the name. It even had some things that I never thought that they would put in the car. I got over the fact that it was going to be called ZL1 instead of Z28 and I can live with that without any problem. Chevy built the ZL1 exactly the way I would have built the car if I could have gone into the parts bins and pulled out the pieces that I wanted. The only things I would add if I could would be the Jay Leno grill and Jay Leno rear fender brake vents. For me, the car is perfect. The proposed Z28 sounds like it will have a NA engine and be more of a track oriented car with less frills. As much as I love the name Z28, the ZL1 will be the car I take home.

The Boss 302 has led me to respect Ford a little more...just a little. That is one mean-looking car. I'll still be standing in line for a ZL1 though.
