I won't claim to know about laser jammers, but radar jammers are definitely illegal in California while radar/laser detectors are not (though I know even detectors are illegal in Virginia and I'm sure other places).

As for beating speed tickets, I've found on one I had about a year or two ago that in all honesty was utterly bogus (and no I'm not just saying that)... I asked for an extension first. Then sent in the "bail" amount and requested a trial by written declaration. I then had another month or something ridiculous to send my declaration in. It got dismissed because the officer never bothered to send in his own declaration. A couple months ago I got one while passing someone, and speeding up to only about 6 or 7 over the speed limit. First time I've ever in my life seen or gotten pulled over for such a small amount!!! I'm planning on doing the same thing - cops don't get paid to write a letter so they usually don't bother.

I don't care about $150 tix. I care about getting busted transporting 20lbs of weed on my daily Miami to Baltimore run while drinking shots of Jack to pass the time.

All kidding aside, your logic makes about as much sense as asking why someone would spend $37k for a new 2SS Camaro when they could just spend $3.7k for a 10 year old Camaro and still get from point a to b in the same time because of the posted speed limit.

No offense to owners of radar/laser jammers or detectors....
If you need one of these devices, you are not paying attention enough when driving. I am fully aware when I'm over the speed limit during driving. If I get pulled over for speeding, I will be aware of it before the officer approaches my car and I will take responsibility.
If you feel the need to test your car, take it to the track or find an appropriate area....

They are definately illegal in Texas, and most states make them illegal by wording their laws like this. Below is a copy of the law at its in the Texas traffic code.

Sec. 547.616. RADAR INTERFERENCE DEVICES; OFFENSE.

(a) In this section, "radar interference device" means a device, a mechanism, an instrument, or equipment that is designed, manufactured, used, or intended to be used to interfere with, scramble, disrupt, or otherwise cause to malfunction a radar or laser device used to measure the speed of a motor vehicle by a law enforcement agency of this state or a political subdivision of this state, including a "radar jamming device," "jammer," "scrambler," or "diffuser." The term does not include a ham radio, band radio, or similar electronic device.

(b) A person, other than a law enforcement officer in the discharge of the officer's official duties, may not use, attempt to use, install, operate, or attempt to operate a radar interference device in a motor vehicle operated by the person.

(c) A person may not purchase, sell, or offer for sale a radar interference device to be used in a manner described by Subsection (b).

(d) A person who violates this section commits an offense. An offense under this subsection is a Class C misdemeanor.

I think you're forgetting about the insurance hikes that most will suffer and where the real money is made.

Anyone else find it unfair, that the insurance companies give these "safety" donations to law enforcement agencies to go out and buy/upgrade their traffic equipment for "safer" roads and then in the end who makes the money off the ticket... Insurance Companies! Where's the checks and balances in that?!

wish i had one, the ones complaining are like traction control and stabilitrak...bunch of nannies... i'd rather spend money on my car than on a ticket, its another cool feature. and to each his own but i think they are cool and like i said wish i had one. like the other guy said. how is it dumb to spend up to 2,000 on that stuff, when people buy 5th gen camaros instead of a cheap reliable car to get from point a to b...
also liked the point of insurances giving hand outs to benefit themselves, is there anyway to verify that?

No,... I don't find it unfair at all. I'm kinda glad that insurance companies invest in safety and do their part to help law enforcement agencies keep the roads safer for my family and everyone elses. The insurance companies do this as a business measure to reduce speed related traffic accidents and fatalities which does save them and us money in the end. Over the past 20 years I have seen many many traffic fatalities that were speed related. I really feel that the "checks and balances",... is all about saving lives and making the roads safer.

Laser jammers also need a clear line of sight between themselves and the laser gun. So if you mount it on your front grille it's not going to be very helpful. As it will be looking directly at the car in front of you pretty much all the time. Just my .02 though, take it for what it's worth.
You basically said what 99% of people with radar/laser detectors (and most that don't) already know.

There's no pill for common sense, is essentially what you're saying. That doesn't mean you can't have a laser/radar detector while being armed with common sense!
