Yeah, if I don't see any threads on the back side of the nut, then I can't be sure it's completely filled. Now that nut is just real tight, not fully torqued. Once I am able to get both installed and torqued, I'm expecting/hoping due to the compression of the bushing I'll have better engagement.
In my line of work, it's not a rule of thumb, it's a regulation.

I still feel something isn't quite right otherwise I would have found some posts when I googled it, and I imagine there are quite a few installs out there.

Take the urethane bushes out and let them warm in the sun or hot water to siften them. That may be all you need to get her bolted down. I won't hurt anything and might work.

Finally
I ended up using large channel locks to squeeze the one side down enough that someone from the top could get the nut started. Once both nuts were torqued, it squeezed the bushing just enough. Something I'll keep an eye on for a bit though.

If they didn't put a bolt/nut in your pocket and run over to the hardware store for longer bolts and new nylon lock-nuts. Be sure to get grade 8.

It's always been the threads above the nut should equal the nut thickness which should equal the diameter of the bolt.

Check the torques after a week.
It has studs on the K-member, doesn't use bolts.
