If GM are experts on marketing and timing of introductions how do you explain the Pontiac Aztec total fail. LOL just joking around. Really though we are getting into March a 1/4 of the year is past, show us the car start production in August if you want. |

Actually it won't be 1/4 of the year until the end of March, not the beginning.... There is still plenty of time before the traditional September new model release... Even though that is hardly ever used any more. I wish they would go back to that tradition, not show anything until they are released for sale... I remember back in the 60's how everyone got excited for the day they uncovered the new models in the showroom.... Now its just blah, we have already seen everything about them for 6 months...

Back in 1970 our local dealer had a fire and had to store his new models behind the building. A friend of mine and myself went there Sunday a week before they were to reveal the 71 models and saw all of them sitting there uncovered. When I saw the new Chevelle I thought they ruined it.

And now I can't wait to find one to restore. My favorite car from that era.

The 70 was much better looking. When they went from quad headlights to 2 it ruined the front end.

Long story behind the Aztec. Happy to share. But timing the launch and introduction of a product is different than the product itself.

The new Jeep Cherokee is almost as ugly. Yet it is popular. Maybe the Aztec was just before it time.

rFirst, do you think the show car was attractive? I think it was certainly sportier than the production Aztec.
GM was basically forced by committee and economics to build the Aztec off of the mini van architecture. This made the cowl several inches taller than the concept. So forced to use the cowl and underbody for the short wheelbase mini van (the Buick Rendezvous used the long wheel base) the proportions of the show car/concept were lost. Also GM elected to "copy" the Honda elements use of the grey lower body cladding. It was intended to give a rugged appearance. That bombed and the lower lading was painted very quickly after launch. This was also an issue with the Avalanche as you may recall and GM also quickly redesigned that as well. In summary it had too many opinions and too many limitations to be as good as the original concept. Perhaps if it had, a differnt story. I had the privilege to take 2 Azteks on long trips. Aside from the appearance, it was a roomy and comfortable trip-mobile.

Maybe not be that exact style of inlet, but I think that's exactly what that section is for. I've been suspecting that the Z28 and/or ZL1 would have some sort of brake cooling ducts in front of the rear wheels........seeing the picture of the stamping tooling pretty much confirms it (in my mind at least).
Same main tooling no matter what model, just a matter of replacing that section with a different section for the cars that get the brake ducts. Like I said though, just my opinion.
